Their rectangular headpieces are filled with iloral ornament whose intricate design incorporates small figures of birds and animals. The artist increases the number of columns from the usual three or four to five and sometimes seven, and occasionally introduces human figures flanking the headpieces. In this case, we have the artist's self-portrait.�Den mest slående detaljen hos illustrationen i detta manuskript är dess komposition och dekor av dess stora khoraner. The Matenadaran collection includes thirteen manuscripts illuminated by Zachariah Aghtamartsi between 1354 and 1403. The design of the book is unusual for the Armenian illuminated manuscripts in that the miniatures are incorporated into the text, sometimes taking up more than a half of the page.�Matenadarans samling omfattar tretton manuskrip illustrerade av Zachariah Aghtamartsi, mellan 1354 och 1403. The 1332 Gospels belongs to the small group of Crimean/Armenian manuscripts whose illumination was inspired by the art of the Palaeologan Renaissance.
The miniatures in the manuscript easily fall into two groups representing the work of two different masters, one of them probably being Grigor Sukiasants who is mentioned in the colophon as the scribe of the book.�1332 års Evengeliebok tillhör den lilla gruppen av Krim-armeniska manuskript vilkas målninagr inspirerades av konsten hos Palaeologiska renässansen. Miniatyrerna i gruppen faller enkelt i två grupper, representerade av verket tillhörande två olika mästare, avvilka en var förmodligen Grigor Sukiasants som omnämns i kolofonen som författare till boken.

The full-length representation in an upright attitude is apparently derived from the Byzantine tradition of portraying saints, while the ornamentation of the wide frame surrounding the figure reflects a typically Oriental taste for excessive decoration. The frame, apart from its purely decorative role, performs the important function of creating a visual link between the human figure and the marginal decor of the page, thus uniting the pictorial and decorative principles of illumination. The skilfully applied shading enabled the artist to achieve perfection in the rendering of facial expression.�")

The use of black aimed at giving prominence to the pattern emphasizes the glow of the gold and imparts an additional splendour to the decor of the headpiece. The treatment of the ornamental patterns in this and other manuscripts of the same school is much more detailed and elaborate than in the miniatures produced at Hromkla. The marginal ornamentation on this page may serve as a good example. It is based on a very complicated pattern in which every subsequent motif grows, as it were, out of the one preceding it: thus, the foliate design incorporates various figures; the interlacing bands support human heads crowned by the figures of birds, whose tails form new interlacing bands, and so on. Worthy of attention is the script which, apart from the usual ornate initial, is composed of large ornamental characters incorporating zoomorphic and geometric elements.�Överstyckets utsmyckning är baserad på ett mönster av sammanflätade röda linjer som formar fem- och åttasidiga stjärnor som står ut mot den gyllene bakgrunden i ett dekorativt galler. Användningen av svart som är menat att ge tyngd till mönstret betonar glöden hos guldet och skänker ytterligare skönhet till dekoren hos överstycket. Behandlingen av de dekorativa mönstren i detta och andra manuskript från samma skola är mycket mer detaljerade och ingående än i miniatyrer producerade i Hromkla. Marginalutsmyckningen på denna sida kan tjäna som ett gott exempel. As a rule, the Gospel episodes are represented by fragments or key symbols corresponding to certain scenes or motifs. Thus, a chalice symbolizes the Baptism, a shepherd blowing a pipe - the Nativity, etc. The Entry into Jerusalem is one of the few scenes presented in greater detail than the rest. The miniature is placed in the right outer margin, elements of the composition intruding between the lines. The whole page thus creates an impression of compositional integrity, in which the text and the illustration naturally supplement and visually support each other.�Flera marginalillustrationer i manuskriptet kompenserar för avsaknanden av hisidiga illustrerade miniatyrer. Som regel är evengeliernas episoder representerade av fragment eller nyckelsymboler som motsvarar vissa scener eller motiv. Därför betyder en kalk dopet, ett herde som blåser på ett rör - Jesu födelse etc. Intåget till Jerusalem är en av de få scener som finns presenterad i större deltaj än resten. Miniatyren är placerad i den högra yttre marginalen, element hos den komposition som tränger mellan linjerna. Hela sidan skapar därför ett intryck av kompositionell integritet, i vilket texten och illustrationen naturligt kompletterar och visuellt stödjer varandra.")

The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres. The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. Samtidigt avslöjar både miniatyrerna hans intresse i linjära design som manifesteras i den skapra avbildningen av klädernas veck och den någon grafiska karaktären hos representationen.
