The treatment of the scene, however, is in tune with the master's usual grotesque and somewhat naive manner. The setting for the figures is provided by a framework of arch-shaped ornamental bands reminiscent of an architectural construction, which, together with the rhythmically balanced arrangement of the figures, imparts a theatrical touch to the scene.�Ovsian var den ende 1300-tals minityrmålaren i Vaspourakan som har inspirerats av motiv rörande Judas samvetskval. Återgivningen av scenen är dock i linje med mästarens vanliga groteska och någorlunda naiva sätt. /mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. I sin helhet visar porträtten konstnärens försök att bryta med det rådande medeltida trenden av en schematisk behandling av karaktärer, avbildande istället en konkret person. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. /mtd-cil-137-m.jpg "It is interesting to compare this miniature with The Raising of Lazarus by Toros Roslin in terms of the changes in the style of Cilician miniature which took place between 1260 and 1280. Roslin's interpretation included only a few essential figures, whereas the present version depicts numerous characters. G. Millet in his Recherches sur l'iconographie de Vevan-gile aux XIV, XV et XVI siecles d'apres les monuments de Mistra, de la Macedoine et du Mont-Athos (Paris, 1916), referring to the appearance (in some Italian and Armenian versions of this subject) of human figures behind the rock, characterized this icon-ographic type as evocative of Byzantine tradition. He explains the presence of these figures by the combination of the main motif with The Entry into Jerusalem. There is also a probability that the artist had in mind certain literary sources, depicting not a crowd of idle onlookers but a group of patriarchs and prophets hopefully watching the miracle from the \"kingdom of the dead\": according to some apocryphal sources and to the text of the Sharakan (an Armenian religious hymn), the raising of Lazarus gave them hope of salvation and deliverance from hell. The treatment of the figures shows the artist's concern for vivid and lifelike representation. Due to the subtle psychological nuances which he manages to convey, each of the characters bears a clear mark of individuality.�Det är intressant att jämföra denna miniatyren med Lazarus uppståndelse av Toros Roslin vad det gäller ändringar i stilen hos kilikiska miniatyren som skedde mellan 1260 och 1280. Roslins tolkning inkluderade endast ett fåtal nödvändiga figurer medan den nuvarande versionen avbildar flera personer. G. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres (see Pls. 104, 110). The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. /mtd-cil-148-m.jpg "Although the motif of The Holy Communion (The Eucharist) connected with the theme of The Last Supper was widespread in Armenian fresco painting, it does not often occur in book illustration.<br>The miniature occupies the lower part of the page and, apart from the numerous gold initials, is the only decorative element. The miniature is flanked by draperies, as if to prevent the scene from overflowing onto the margins. The composition of the miniature is strictly balanced by the two symmetrical groups of figures united by the figure of Christ in the middle. The colouring is based on red, blue and gold. The pictorial treatment of the scene, especially in so far as the modelling of faces is concerned, is somewhat schematic and betrays a less competent hand than that which is apparent in The Magi before Herod. Even though the artist employs the more advanced technique of shading, he still resorts to the linear method.�Även om motiven med Nattvarden, kopplad till teman med Jesu sista måltid var utbrett i armenisk freskåmålning, förekommer den inte så ofta i bokmålningar. Miniatyren upptar den nedre delen av sidan och, förutom de otaliga guldinitialerna, är det enda dekorativa elementet. Miniatyren är flankerad av draperier som om för att hindra scenen från att spilla över till marginalerna. Miniatyrens komposition är strikt balanserad av de två symmetriska grupperna av figurer förenade av Kristus figur i mitten. Färgen är baserad på röd, blå och guld.
