The full-length representation in an upright attitude is apparently derived from the Byzantine tradition of portraying saints, while the ornamentation of the wide frame surrounding the figure reflects a typically Oriental taste for excessive decoration. The frame, apart from its purely decorative role, performs the important function of creating a visual link between the human figure and the marginal decor of the page, thus uniting the pictorial and decorative principles of illumination. The skilfully applied shading enabled the artist to achieve perfection in the rendering of facial expression.�")

It is characterized by a graphic quality of pictorial language, the consecutive spatial planes being indicated only by the overlapping of figures.<br>The modelling of forms is achieved here not by the varied subtle shades of colour, but by alternation of the darker and lighter tones. The above-mentioned graphic quality is due to the prominent use of the linear method in the treatment of the figures and draperies. In spite of a reticence and lack of variety in the purely pictorial devices, the miniature displays the high level of artistry characteristic of Cilician book illustration.�Scenen presenteras i en av de fullsidiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. Den kännetecknas av en grafisk kvalitet av bildspråk, på varandra efterföljande spatialla planerna som indikeras endast genom figurernas överlappande. Modelleringen av former uppnås här, inte av en variation av subtila färgnyanser, utan genom växlingen av mörka och ljusa toner. Den ovannämda grafiska kvaliten är på grund av den skickliga behandlingen av figurer och draperier. Trots en förtegenhet och avsaknaden av variation i den rent bildliga enheterna, visar miniatyren en hög nivå av konstnärlighet, karktäristisk för den kilikiska bokmålningen.")

Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

The portraits of the donor and his wife are skilfully incorporated into the composition. Their faces were apparently painted with a view to achieving a likeness. The dramatic effect of the scene is produced by the vigorous movements of Christ and Adam whom he is taking out of hell, by the dynamic treatment of the draperies, caught, as it were, in the speed of movement, and also of the landscape and of certain minor details, hands in particular.<br>Incidentally, the colouring, composed of quiet and delicate shades of pink, lilac, pale green and light blue set off by gold, does not seem to support the dramatism of the composition. Although the figures are presented in complex foreshortenings and the artist employs the technique of tonal modelling, the treatment of the scene, as of all the other miniatures in the manuscript, remains on the whole flat.�Trots mångfalden hos figurer som fyller miniatyren, är dess kompositionella arrangemang märkvärdigt för sin klarhet. Den dramatiska effekten hos scenen produceras av de vigurösa rörelserna hos Kristus och Adam som han tar ut ur helvetet, genom den dynamiska behandlingen av draperier, fångad, som om det vore i en snabb rörelse och även av lanskapet och vissa mindre detaljer, speciellt händer. Som ett sammanträffande, verkar färgsättningen, komponerad av mjuka och delikata nyanser av rosa, lila, blek grön och ljusblå mot guld, inte stödja dramatiken hos kompositionen. The restrained colour range is based on a combination of red (the prevalent colour), blue and gold. The treatment of details demonstrates the perfect taste of the illuminator. He supplements the intricate ornamental patterns with numerous figures of birds (cocks, hoopoes, etc.) and gives the columns' capitals the shape of ox or lion heads. Both the birds and the animal heads, despite their apparent naturalism, have a purely decorative colouring.�Konstnären ger företräde till storskaliga element och design och kolumnerna hos hans khoran är kortare än vanligt. Den begränsade färgpaletten är baserad på en kombination av rött (den dominerande färgen), blått och guld. Behandlingen av detaljer demonstrerar den perfekta smaken hos konstnären. Han kompletterar det invecklade dekorativa mönstret med flera figurer av fåglar (tuppar, härfåglar etc.) och ger kolumnernas kapitäl formen av en oxes eller ett lejons huvud. Både fåglarnas och djurens huvud, trots deras uppebara naturalism, har en ren dekorativ färgsättning.")
