The influence of Latin illuminated Gospels is manifest in the Evangelists' portraits which are incorporated into the headpiece of the corresponding Gospel. The Evangelists are fair-haired and have tonsures which make them look like Roman Catholic priests. Latin models are also discernible in the decorative initials and in the ornamentation of the page. The somewhat schematic treatment of details, however, as well as the lack of optical approach and the saturated colouring should be undoubtedly referred to the national Armenian tradition.�Målningen från Perugia-evangeliet brås mycket på den latinska manuskripttraditionen. Inflyttandet av latinska illustrerade evengelierna sysns i evangelisternas porträtt som finns inarbetade i huvudstycket i respektive evengeliebok. Evangelisterna är fagerhåriga och har tonsurer som gör att de ser ut som romerk-katolska präster. Latinska modeller är också urskiljbara i de dekorativa initialerna och i utsmyckningen av sidan. Den någon schematiska behandlingen av detaljer, så väl som avsknaden av optisk närmande och den mörka färgsättningen bör dock refereras utan tvekan till den armeniska nationella traditionen.")

The painting is also remarkable for the accuracy with which the artist depicted costumes and furniture. Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.

The miniatures of Hrstakes are usually stylized to such an extent that the forms of the figures, the folds of their garments, the details of the setting, etc. are subordinated to the all-important linear effect and are therefore perceived as purely ornamental details. At the same time, in spite of the limited palette, composed mainly of green and red with occasional additions of blue and brown, his miniatures impress one by the harmony of their colouring and the skilfully balanced composition.�Återigen har vi här två scener illustrerande Kristi mirakel - ett motiv som var extremt populär hos Vaspourakans miniatyrmålare - lagts ihop på en sida. Miniatyrerna av Hrstakes är vanligen så pass stiliserade att formerna hos figurerna, vecken hos deras kläder, detaljerna hos arrangemanget etc. är underordnade den viktiga linjära effekten och är därför ansedda som rent dekorativa detaljer. Samtidigt, trots den begränsade paletten, komponerad i huvudsak med grönt och rött och bitvis tillägg av blått och brunt, imponerar hans miniatyrer en genom harmonin hos deras färgsättning och den skickligt balanserade kompositionen.")

The treatment of the scene, however, is in tune with the master's usual grotesque and somewhat naive manner. The setting for the figures is provided by a framework of arch-shaped ornamental bands reminiscent of an architectural construction, which, together with the rhythmically balanced arrangement of the figures, imparts a theatrical touch to the scene.�Ovsian var den ende 1300-tals minityrmålaren i Vaspourakan som har inspirerats av motiv rörande Judas samvetskval. Återgivningen av scenen är dock i linje med mästarens vanliga groteska och någorlunda naiva sätt. Scenbilden för figurerna anskaffas av ett ramverk av bågformade utsmyckningar som påminner om en arkitektonisk konstruktion, vilken, tillsammans med det rytmisk balanserande arrangemanget of figurerna återger en teatrisk ton till scenen.")

/mtd-cil-91-m.jpg "The tympanums of the arches decorating the rectangular entablatures of the khorans comprise half-length representations - of Eusebius and Carpianus (on the pages with the Letter), of the prophets and of Christ and the Virgin (above the Canon tables). While representations of Eusebius and Carpi-anus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S.Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S. Der Nerssesian, blev de vid förekommande i armeniska och i synnerhet i kilikiska bokmålerier endast under 1200-talet), är porträtt av det Gamla Testamentets profeter i Evangeliernas manuskript ändå rätt sällsynt. Konstnären önskade antagligen betoan det nära bandet mellan det Gamla och Nya Testamentet%B4. /mtd-cil-102-m.jpg "Whereas in The Descent from the Cross (PL 96) the artist emphasized the inner dramatism of the scene, in The Crucifixion he is more concerned with the motifs of sacrifice and redemption, and in his attempt to convey the latter he endows the otherwise mournful scene with a certain touch of elation. This is achieved by the soft colouring excluding all contrasting colours, as well as by the treatment of the principal characters. The allegories of Ecclesia and Synagogue which were quite a novelty in the Armenian miniature at the time were borrowed by the artist from Byzantine and Western European art.�Medan i Nedstigningen från korset (PL96) har konstnären betonat den inre dramatiken i scenen, är han i Korsfästelsen mer mån om motiven för uppoffring och botgöring och i sitt försök att uttrycka den senare skänker han en viss upprymdhet till den i övrigt sorgsna scenen. Detta uppnås genom den mjuka färgsättningen så väl som genom behandlingen av huvudkaraktärerna.
