But the most striking thing about the miniature is its emotion-charged colouring. The dark and gloomy hues give a tragic touch to the picture, while Christ's eyes seem to express serene calm and fortitude.�Sidan är anmärkningsvärd för dess tydliga och eleganta kaligrafi i vilken guldbokstäber och dekorativa initialer är satt mot de strama svarta karaktärerna av unicalskrift och för dess utsökta konstnärliga marginalminiatyrer som är i perfekt harmoni med den marginella utsmyckningsdesignen. The same applies to the chair on which the Evangelist is seated: similar wooden chairs are still in use in Armenian villages.�Evangelisten är avbildad i enlighet med konventionella riktlinjer antagna vid Siuniks skriptorium mot en vägg som separerar figurerna från byggnaderna som syns i bakgrunden. Byggnaderna, trots det schematiska behandlingen, påminner faktiskt om verkliga strukturer. The space within the framework, instead of containing the text of the letter of Eusebius or the Canon tables, is filled with an ornamental pattern of crescent-shaped, pointed and swirling leaves. The pattern is similar to those used in the Moush Homilarium and in the 1201 Gospels and is also evocative of the wall reliefs in the monastery of Airivank where the manuscript was produced.�Behandlingen av khoranen är något ovanligt. Utrymmet mellan ramverket, istället för att omfatta texten hos brevet från Eusebius eller texten för kanonskriften, är fylld med ett utsmyckningsmönster av halvmånsformade, spetsiga och virvlande löv. Mönstret är likt de som använts i Moush homilarium och i 1201 års Evangelium och påminner även om väggrelieferna i klostret Airivank där manuskriptet porducerades.")

In the miniature, the Virgin and Child turn their heads to look at the approaching Magi. The laconic composition includes only the principal characters, represented against an almost blank background, with a summary indication of the setting. The drawing is both delicate and supple, and the contours are painted in light and dark shades of blue, which gives them a dynamic vividness. The light and airy treatment of the miniature produces the impression of a water-colour.�Enligt dåtidens tradition i Vaspourakan, finns tonfallet i Vardans tolkning av Jesu födelse i motivet hos De vise männens tillbedjan- I miniatyren vänder Jungfrun och barnet sina huvuden för att titta på de annalkande vise männen. Den ordknappa kompositionen inkluderar endast de viktiga karaktärerna, representerade mot en så gott som blank bakgrund och en sammanfattande indikation av scenbilden. Ritningen är både delikat och smidig och konturerna är målade med ljusa och mörka nyanser av blå, vilka ger dem en dynamisk livlighet. Den lätta och luftiga sammansättningen av miniatyren producerar intrycket av en vattenfärg.")

The elaborate ornamental designs are executed with great skill and ingenuity. The ornamentation is based on palmettes which fill the rectangular headpiece of the Canon table and decorate the bases and capitals of the columns which, unlike many other khorans in this manuscript, do not imitate the texture of stone, but are treated schematically as bands of gold covered by interlacing red and blue narrow stripes. The characteristic movements of the birds filling the top and outer margins are rendered in an accurate and lifelike manner.�Den glada atmosfären som genomtränger bilden skapas av den briljanta färgskalan av blått, grönt och rött med inslag av guld. Den genomtänkta usmyckningsdesignen är utförda med stor skicklighet och genialitet. Utsmyckningen är baserad på palmetterna som fyller det rektangulära övertyscket av kanoniska texterna och dekorerar baserna och kapitalerna hos kolumnerna som, olik många andra khoraner i detta manuskript, ej imiterar texturen hos sten, men behandlas schematiskt som band a guld täckt av sammanflätade röda och blåa nära band. Fåglarnas karaktäristiska som fyller toppen och yttre marginalerna är återgivna i ett noggrannt och naturtroget sätt.")

/mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. Den tragiska atmosfären som genomsyrar scenen känns inte igen enbart hos figurerna, utan även i färgsättningen, med dess dystra skuggor av mörkblå. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.
