The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The Matenadaran collection includes thirteen manuscripts illuminated by Zachariah Aghtamartsi between 1354 and 1403. The design of the book is unusual for the Armenian illuminated manuscripts in that the miniatures are incorporated into the text, sometimes taking up more than a half of the page.�Matenadarans samling omfattar tretton manuskrip illustrerade av Zachariah Aghtamartsi, mellan 1354 och 1403. The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres. The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. The treatment of the scene, however, is in tune with the master's usual grotesque and somewhat naive manner. The setting for the figures is provided by a framework of arch-shaped ornamental bands reminiscent of an architectural construction, which, together with the rhythmically balanced arrangement of the figures, imparts a theatrical touch to the scene.�Ovsian var den ende 1300-tals minityrmålaren i Vaspourakan som har inspirerats av motiv rörande Judas samvetskval. /mtd-dia-158-m.jpg "Since the Apocalypse had long been relegated to apocryphal sources, it was not included into the biblical illustrative cycles until a relatively late date. The earliest Apocalypse illustrations found in Armenian illuminated manuscripts date from the late thirteenth (e.g. the 1269 Bible of Yerzynka) and the early fourteenth century (Lectionaries). This is also true for the miniature in question, which was executed at the end of the thirteenth century by an Armenian master in Bologna. The treatment of the subject here is rather unusual: the God's throne is surrounded not by the conventional elders (Rev. 4:4) but by youths.<br>The miniature is stylistically related to late thirteenth-century Byzantine illumination, and in so far as its artistic quality is concerned it ranks among the best samples of Armenian book painting. In addition to expensive pigments and gold, the artist also used silver which effectively sets off the dark silhouettes of the angels.�Då Apokalypsen hade länge hänförts apokryfiska källor, var den inte inlkuderad i de bibliska illustrativa kretsarna tills relativt senare datum. Den tidigaste apokalyptiska illustrasionerna som återfinns i armeniska illustrerade manuskript daterade till sent 1200-tal (t.ex. 1269 års Bibel från Yerzynka) och tidigt 1300-tal (Evangeliebok). Detta stämmer även för miniatyren i fråga, som skapades vid slutet av 1200-talet av en armenisk mästare i Bologna. The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.

While representations of Eusebius and Carpi-anus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S.Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S.
