The influence of Latin illuminated Gospels is manifest in the Evangelists' portraits which are incorporated into the headpiece of the corresponding Gospel. The Evangelists are fair-haired and have tonsures which make them look like Roman Catholic priests. Latin models are also discernible in the decorative initials and in the ornamentation of the page. The somewhat schematic treatment of details, however, as well as the lack of optical approach and the saturated colouring should be undoubtedly referred to the national Armenian tradition.�Målningen från Perugia-evangeliet brås mycket på den latinska manuskripttraditionen. Inflyttandet av latinska illustrerade evengelierna sysns i evangelisternas porträtt som finns inarbetade i huvudstycket i respektive evengeliebok. Evangelisterna är fagerhåriga och har tonsurer som gör att de ser ut som romerk-katolska präster. Latinska modeller är också urskiljbara i de dekorativa initialerna och i utsmyckningen av sidan. Den någon schematiska behandlingen av detaljer, så väl som avsknaden av optisk närmande och den mörka färgsättningen bör dock refereras utan tvekan till den armeniska nationella traditionen.")

/mtd-dia-158-m.jpg "Since the Apocalypse had long been relegated to apocryphal sources, it was not included into the biblical illustrative cycles until a relatively late date. The earliest Apocalypse illustrations found in Armenian illuminated manuscripts date from the late thirteenth (e.g. the 1269 Bible of Yerzynka) and the early fourteenth century (Lectionaries). This is also true for the miniature in question, which was executed at the end of the thirteenth century by an Armenian master in Bologna. The treatment of the subject here is rather unusual: the God's throne is surrounded not by the conventional elders (Rev. 4:4) but by youths.<br>The miniature is stylistically related to late thirteenth-century Byzantine illumination, and in so far as its artistic quality is concerned it ranks among the best samples of Armenian book painting. In addition to expensive pigments and gold, the artist also used silver which effectively sets off the dark silhouettes of the angels.�Då Apokalypsen hade länge hänförts apokryfiska källor, var den inte inlkuderad i de bibliska illustrativa kretsarna tills relativt senare datum. Den tidigaste apokalyptiska illustrasionerna som återfinns i armeniska illustrerade manuskript daterade till sent 1200-tal (t.ex. 1269 års Bibel från Yerzynka) och tidigt 1300-tal (Evangeliebok). Detta stämmer även för miniatyren i fråga, som skapades vid slutet av 1200-talet av en armenisk mästare i Bologna. The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.

/mtd-cil-137-m.jpg "It is interesting to compare this miniature with The Raising of Lazarus by Toros Roslin in terms of the changes in the style of Cilician miniature which took place between 1260 and 1280. Roslin's interpretation included only a few essential figures, whereas the present version depicts numerous characters. G. Millet in his Recherches sur l'iconographie de Vevan-gile aux XIV, XV et XVI siecles d'apres les monuments de Mistra, de la Macedoine et du Mont-Athos (Paris, 1916), referring to the appearance (in some Italian and Armenian versions of this subject) of human figures behind the rock, characterized this icon-ographic type as evocative of Byzantine tradition. He explains the presence of these figures by the combination of the main motif with The Entry into Jerusalem. There is also a probability that the artist had in mind certain literary sources, depicting not a crowd of idle onlookers but a group of patriarchs and prophets hopefully watching the miracle from the \"kingdom of the dead\": according to some apocryphal sources and to the text of the Sharakan (an Armenian religious hymn), the raising of Lazarus gave them hope of salvation and deliverance from hell. The treatment of the figures shows the artist's concern for vivid and lifelike representation. Due to the subtle psychological nuances which he manages to convey, each of the characters bears a clear mark of individuality.�Det är intressant att jämföra denna miniatyren med Lazarus uppståndelse av Toros Roslin vad det gäller ändringar i stilen hos kilikiska miniatyren som skedde mellan 1260 och 1280. Roslins tolkning inkluderade endast ett fåtal nödvändiga figurer medan den nuvarande versionen avbildar flera personer. G. Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.

The representation of St. Prochoros is likewise rather unusual - he is shown not as a youth, but as a middle-aged man with a beard and moustache. On the whole, Khatcher's miniatures are remarkable for the intensity of facial expressions, unusual compositional treatment and characteristic colouring.�I enlighet med den dåtida vaspourakanska traditionen som skiljde sig från kanoniska scheman, har konstnären avbildad S:t John lutande på sin stav. The decline of Cilician miniature art towards the end of the thirteenth century is quite evident in this manuscript. It concerns the Evangelists' portraits and to an even greater extent the decor of the illuminated folios. The figures in the miniatures lose their suave elegance, the colours are no longer rich or refined. At the same time the main principles of figural and facial treatment and the traditions of the compositional arrangement of the scenes, inherited from the 1280s, remain almost unchanged.�Nedgången hos kilikisk miniatyr mot slutet av 1200-talet är rätt uppenbart i detta manuskript. Det rör sig om evengelisternas porträtt och i en ännu högre grad om dekoren av den illustrerade sidorna. Figurerna i miniatyrerna förlorar sin milda elegans, färgerna är inte längre rika eller förfinade. Samtidigt kvarblir principerna för figurernas och ansiktenas behandling och traditionerna för det kompositionella arrangemanget hos scenen, ärvt från 1280-talet, så gott som intakt.
