The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. I dessa miniatyrer blandas de lokala traditionerna i Siunik noggrannt med tendenser från den kilikiska konsten.

/mtd-cil-129-m.jpg "The miniature conveys a feeling of anxiety and apprehension as reflected in the gestures of the archangel, in the general rhythm of forms, and in the spatial arrangement and colouring. The latter is rich and varied, and the colours are applied in a carpet-like fashion, leaving very little room for gold. Even though the paint layer is not in a very good state of preservation, most of the blues being altogether lost, the colouring of the miniature retains its expressiveness. As elsewhere in this manuscript, the artist uses here his favourite quiet reddish tints, effectively set off by occasional patches of dark red. In so far as iconography is concerned the miniature deviates in some ways from traditional models. Thus, the scroll of parchment in the archangel's hand (instead of the more customary staff) and the crown on the Virgin's head are unusual for Armenian Gospel manuscripts and are due, according to S. Der Nersessian, to the influence of Western European art.�Miniatyren förmedlar en känsla av ångest och ängslan som reflekteras i ärkeängelns kroppshållning, i formernas allmänna rytm och i det spatiall arrangemanget och färgsättningen. Den senare är rik och variernade och färgerna är applicerade i ett mattliknande sätt och lämnar väldigt litet utrymme för guld. Även om färglagret inte är i så gott skick, det mesta av den blåa färgen borta, bibehåller färgsättningen hos miniatyren sin uttryckfullhet. Så som andra platser, använder konstnären här sin favorit, mjuka röda toner, effektivt framhävt av enstaka bitar av mörkröd. /mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. Den tragiska atmosfären som genomsyrar scenen känns inte igen enbart hos figurerna, utan även i färgsättningen, med dess dystra skuggor av mörkblå. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The full-length representation in an upright attitude is apparently derived from the Byzantine tradition of portraying saints, while the ornamentation of the wide frame surrounding the figure reflects a typically Oriental taste for excessive decoration. The frame, apart from its purely decorative role, performs the important function of creating a visual link between the human figure and the marginal decor of the page, thus uniting the pictorial and decorative principles of illumination. The skilfully applied shading enabled the artist to achieve perfection in the rendering of facial expression.�")

/mtd-cil-145-m.jpg "The artist combines in this version several chronologically incompatible scenes referring to the arrival of the Magi in Jerusalem: he shows the Magi as an isolated group; then as standing before Herod who questions them on the birthplace of Jesus and consults the learned men; finally, the Magi appear for the third time as leaving the town. The figure in the right-hand margin represents the Prophet Micah who is referred to by the learned men. The treatment of decorative and pictorial details in the miniature, of the marginal and the initial results in the stylistic uniformity of the overall design of the page. The artist displays a perfect command of figural representation -in spite of their small size, the figures are minutely elaborated, and their movements and postures are expressive and natural.�I denna version kombinerar konstnären flera kronologisk oförenliga scener referrerande till ankomsten av de vise männen till Jerusalem: han visar de vise männen som en isolerad grupp; sedan som stående framför Herodes som frågar dem om Jesus födelseplats och rådfrågar de lärda männen; slutgligen visas de vise männen för tredje gången som åkande från staden. Figuren i den högra sidan av marginalen representerar profeten Mika som tilltalas av en av de vise männen. Behandlingen av de dekorativa och bildliga detaljerna i miniatyren, hos marginalen och initialen resulterar i den stilistiska uniformiteten av den övergripande siddesignen. Contrary to the predominant iconographic convention the Infant Christ is depicted as stepping forward to meet St. Simeon. A similar archaic treatment is to be found in a carved ivory diptych dating from the seventh or eighth century in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The ornamentation decorating the pillars and the dome of the temple plays a key role in the miniature.�De tolv rapphönsen som krönar templet symboliserar apostlarna. I motsats till den dominerande ikonografiska konventionen är Jesubarnet avbildad som framlutande för att möta S:t Simeon.
