/mtd-cil-90-m.jpg "The tympanums of the arches decorating the rectangular entablatures of the khorans comprise half-length representations - of Eusebius and Carpianus (on the pages with the Letter), of the prophets and of Christ and the Virgin (above the Canon tables). While representations of Eusebius and Carpianus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S. Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S. Der Nerssesian, blev de vid förekommande i armeniska och i synnerhet i kilikiska bokmålerier endast under 1200-talet), är porträtt av det Gamla Testamentets profeter i Evangeliernas manuskript ändå rätt sällsynt. /mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

Certain characteristics, however, rule out the possibility of attributing the manuscript to a Cilician master. Such is, for example, the free and sweeping manner of painting resulting in a somewhat generalized treatment of forms, typical of the north-east of historical Armenia.�Miniatyrerna i manuskriptet avslöjar inflytandet av kilikiansk konst som omfattar både ikonografin och tekniken. /mtd-gr-25-m.jpg "The images of the Virgin and the archangel Gabriel, depicted in a soft and delicate manner, are distinguished by the beauty and spirituality of their faces. The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. Figurerna står mot en utsmyckad bakgrund upplivad i mitten genom ett nästan realitiskt inslag - två bågar med noggrannt återgiven murbruk och avbrott med ett kil mellan dem. Den senare detaljen avslöjar händelsens arrangemang, som lär ha ägt rum vid brunnen. Samtidigt har Jungfrun en garnboll i handen, en hänsyftning till hennes uppväxt i Jerusalems tempel där hon skulle ha spinnt och vävt prästernas skrud. The usual khoran pattern (the arch-shaped framework and ornamental columns) is often replaced by intricate ornamental headpieces in which floral motifs are combined with figures of animals and human faces, incorporated into the general decorative pattern.�Utsmyckningen hos manuskriptet är till en stor del baserad på den historiska traditioner i armenisk konst: förutom dess rent dekorativa roll, inkluderar utsmyckningen olika betydelsefulla symboler. /mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.
