His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. Hans miniatyrer visar en stor del av persiskt inflytande: karaktärerna har runda rosenkindade ansikten, smala mandelformade ögon och bågformade ögonbryn. The marginal decoration on f. 20 contains an allegoric representation of the Tree of Jesse. S. Der Nersessian believes that this motif, which had long been popular in Western European art, became more and more widespread during the thirteenth century in the art of Eastern Christendom.<br>The ornate headpiece of the other folio (f. 107) is reminiscent of a lattice window through which dazzling sunlight breaks forth. The overall decor of the folio is made remarkably attractive and expressive by the contrast of the light openwork ornament with the solid figures of two fallow deer presented symmetrically, in a heraldic fashion, in the middle of the headpiece, and with the delicate ornamental design of the border.�Dekoren här är mindre praktfull än den i titelsidan hos 1286 års evangeliebok. Den är mer återhållsam och kompakt i sina proportioner. Dekorationen hos marginalerna hos f. 20 innehåller en allegorisk representation av Isais träd. S. Contrary to the predominant iconographic convention the Infant Christ is depicted as stepping forward to meet St. Simeon. A similar archaic treatment is to be found in a carved ivory diptych dating from the seventh or eighth century in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The ornamentation decorating the pillars and the dome of the temple plays a key role in the miniature.�De tolv rapphönsen som krönar templet symboliserar apostlarna. They also demonstrate the remarkable skill of the artist who was an accomplished miniaturist, as well as a fine draughtsman and a perfect colourist.�Två scener som avbildats på en sida är ett traditionellt särdrag hos illustrerade manuskript i Vaspourakan. Miniatyrerna är märkvärdiga för den känslomässiga dynamiken hos deras komposition och för deras skarpa och uttrycksfulla ögon och målade drag hos karaktärerna, avbildade i det livliga och lediga sättet hos folkkonst. /mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. I sin helhet visar porträtten konstnärens försök att bryta med det rådande medeltida trenden av en schematisk behandling av karaktärer, avbildande istället en konkret person. The usual khoran pattern (the arch-shaped framework and ornamental columns) is often replaced by intricate ornamental headpieces in which floral motifs are combined with figures of animals and human faces, incorporated into the general decorative pattern.�Utsmyckningen hos manuskriptet är till en stor del baserad på den historiska traditioner i armenisk konst: förutom dess rent dekorativa roll, inkluderar utsmyckningen olika betydelsefulla symboler.
