The decline of Cilician miniature art towards the end of the thirteenth century is quite evident in this manuscript. It concerns the Evangelists' portraits and to an even greater extent the decor of the illuminated folios. The figures in the miniatures lose their suave elegance, the colours are no longer rich or refined. At the same time the main principles of figural and facial treatment and the traditions of the compositional arrangement of the scenes, inherited from the 1280s, remain almost unchanged.�Nedgången hos kilikisk miniatyr mot slutet av 1200-talet är rätt uppenbart i detta manuskript. Det rör sig om evengelisternas porträtt och i en ännu högre grad om dekoren av den illustrerade sidorna. Figurerna i miniatyrerna förlorar sin milda elegans, färgerna är inte längre rika eller förfinade. Samtidigt kvarblir principerna för figurernas och ansiktenas behandling och traditionerna för det kompositionella arrangemanget hos scenen, ärvt från 1280-talet, så gott som intakt.

The Gospel manuscript copied in the fifteenth century was later supplemented with eight folios containing thirteenth- or fourteenth-century miniatures on Old and New Testament subjects.�Evangeliemanuskriptet som kopierades under 1400-talet kompletterades senare med åtta sidor innehållande 1200- eller 1300-tals miniatyrer om motiv ur Gamla och Nya testament.

/mtd-gr-25-m.jpg "The images of the Virgin and the archangel Gabriel, depicted in a soft and delicate manner, are distinguished by the beauty and spirituality of their faces. The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. Figurerna står mot en utsmyckad bakgrund upplivad i mitten genom ett nästan realitiskt inslag - två bågar med noggrannt återgiven murbruk och avbrott med ett kil mellan dem. Den senare detaljen avslöjar händelsens arrangemang, som lär ha ägt rum vid brunnen. Just as in the 1286 Lectionary, the characters are treated with a striking vividness and realism; their postures are natural and convincing, their faces and movements lively and expressive.<br>Tonal modelling aimed at achieving the effect of volume is reinforced by a sharp delineation of contours. The most prominent part in the colouring is played by different shades of lilac, violet and pink. The ingenious use of gold applied in fine, light strokes imparts a relief-like character to every detail.�Kompositionen är stilistisk relaterad till miniatyren som avbildar samma ämne i 1286 års Evangeliebok och presenterar en reducerad version av samma ikonografiska model. Precis som i 1286 års Evangeliebok, är karaktärerna behandlade med slående livlighet och realism; deras kroppshållning är naturliga och övertygande, deras ansikten och rörelser är naturenliga och uttrycksfulla. Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

The space within the framework, instead of containing the text of the letter of Eusebius or the Canon tables, is filled with an ornamental pattern of crescent-shaped, pointed and swirling leaves. The pattern is similar to those used in the Moush Homilarium and in the 1201 Gospels and is also evocative of the wall reliefs in the monastery of Airivank where the manuscript was produced.�Behandlingen av khoranen är något ovanligt. Utrymmet mellan ramverket, istället för att omfatta texten hos brevet från Eusebius eller texten för kanonskriften, är fylld med ett utsmyckningsmönster av halvmånsformade, spetsiga och virvlande löv. Mönstret är likt de som använts i Moush homilarium och i 1201 års Evangelium och påminner även om väggrelieferna i klostret Airivank där manuskriptet porducerades.")

But the most striking thing about the miniature is its emotion-charged colouring. The dark and gloomy hues give a tragic touch to the picture, while Christ's eyes seem to express serene calm and fortitude.�Sidan är anmärkningsvärd för dess tydliga och eleganta kaligrafi i vilken guldbokstäber och dekorativa initialer är satt mot de strama svarta karaktärerna av unicalskrift och för dess utsökta konstnärliga marginalminiatyrer som är i perfekt harmoni med den marginella utsmyckningsdesignen.
