His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. /mtd-cil-129-m.jpg "The miniature conveys a feeling of anxiety and apprehension as reflected in the gestures of the archangel, in the general rhythm of forms, and in the spatial arrangement and colouring. The latter is rich and varied, and the colours are applied in a carpet-like fashion, leaving very little room for gold. Even though the paint layer is not in a very good state of preservation, most of the blues being altogether lost, the colouring of the miniature retains its expressiveness. As elsewhere in this manuscript, the artist uses here his favourite quiet reddish tints, effectively set off by occasional patches of dark red. In so far as iconography is concerned the miniature deviates in some ways from traditional models. Thus, the scroll of parchment in the archangel's hand (instead of the more customary staff) and the crown on the Virgin's head are unusual for Armenian Gospel manuscripts and are due, according to S. Der Nersessian, to the influence of Western European art.�Miniatyren förmedlar en känsla av ångest och ängslan som reflekteras i ärkeängelns kroppshållning, i formernas allmänna rytm och i det spatiall arrangemanget och färgsättningen. Den senare är rik och variernade och färgerna är applicerade i ett mattliknande sätt och lämnar väldigt litet utrymme för guld. Thus, the facial type of the Evangelist, his somewhat heavy figure, the technique of face-modelling, and, finally, the choice of red, dark blue and dove-grey for the decoration of the framework go back to earlier models. But as interpreted by an artist working in the last decade of the century, there is a noticeable deterioration in almost all pictorial elements which lose their original harmonious integrity. This is especially evident in the simplified treatment of the figure, in the awkwardness of the posture, in the crude colouring and in the schematic linear design.�Stilen hos miniatyren påminner om vissa drag hos kilikiska bokmåleriet under 1280-talet. Därför är ansiktsuttrycken hos evangelisten, hans något tunga figur, tekniken hos ansiktsmodelleringen och slutgligen, valet av rött, mörkblå och duvgrått för dekorationen av ramverket går tillbaka till tidigare modeller. The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

/mtd-cil-92-m.jpg "The tympanums of the arches decorating the rectangular entablatures of the khorans comprise half-length representations - of Eusebius and Carpianus (on the pages with the Letter), of the prophets and of Christ and the Virgin (above the Canon tables). While representations of Eusebius and Carpi-anus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S.Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S. Der Nerssesian, blev de vid förekommande i armeniska och i synnerhet i kilikiska bokmålerier endast under 1200-talet), är porträtt av det Gamla Testamentets profeter i Evangeliernas manuskript ändå rätt sällsynt. Just as in the 1286 Lectionary, the characters are treated with a striking vividness and realism; their postures are natural and convincing, their faces and movements lively and expressive.<br>Tonal modelling aimed at achieving the effect of volume is reinforced by a sharp delineation of contours. The most prominent part in the colouring is played by different shades of lilac, violet and pink. The ingenious use of gold applied in fine, light strokes imparts a relief-like character to every detail.�Kompositionen är stilistisk relaterad till miniatyren som avbildar samma ämne i 1286 års Evangeliebok och presenterar en reducerad version av samma ikonografiska model. Precis som i 1286 års Evangeliebok, är karaktärerna behandlade med slående livlighet och realism; deras kroppshållning är naturliga och övertygande, deras ansikten och rörelser är naturenliga och uttrycksfulla.
