Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.

The influence of Latin illuminated Gospels is manifest in the Evangelists' portraits which are incorporated into the headpiece of the corresponding Gospel. The Evangelists are fair-haired and have tonsures which make them look like Roman Catholic priests. Latin models are also discernible in the decorative initials and in the ornamentation of the page. The somewhat schematic treatment of details, however, as well as the lack of optical approach and the saturated colouring should be undoubtedly referred to the national Armenian tradition.�Målningen från Perugia-evangeliet brås mycket på den latinska manuskripttraditionen. Inflyttandet av latinska illustrerade evengelierna sysns i evangelisternas porträtt som finns inarbetade i huvudstycket i respektive evengeliebok. Evangelisterna är fagerhåriga och har tonsurer som gör att de ser ut som romerk-katolska präster. Latinska modeller är också urskiljbara i de dekorativa initialerna och i utsmyckningen av sidan. Den någon schematiska behandlingen av detaljer, så väl som avsknaden av optisk närmande och den mörka färgsättningen bör dock refereras utan tvekan till den armeniska nationella traditionen.")

Just as in the 1286 Lectionary, the characters are treated with a striking vividness and realism; their postures are natural and convincing, their faces and movements lively and expressive.<br>Tonal modelling aimed at achieving the effect of volume is reinforced by a sharp delineation of contours. The most prominent part in the colouring is played by different shades of lilac, violet and pink. The ingenious use of gold applied in fine, light strokes imparts a relief-like character to every detail.�Kompositionen är stilistisk relaterad till miniatyren som avbildar samma ämne i 1286 års Evangeliebok och presenterar en reducerad version av samma ikonografiska model. Precis som i 1286 års Evangeliebok, är karaktärerna behandlade med slående livlighet och realism; deras kroppshållning är naturliga och övertygande, deras ansikten och rörelser är naturenliga och uttrycksfulla. The restrained colour range is based on a combination of red (the prevalent colour), blue and gold. The treatment of details demonstrates the perfect taste of the illuminator. He supplements the intricate ornamental patterns with numerous figures of birds (cocks, hoopoes, etc.) and gives the columns' capitals the shape of ox or lion heads. Both the birds and the animal heads, despite their apparent naturalism, have a purely decorative colouring.�Konstnären ger företräde till storskaliga element och design och kolumnerna hos hans khoran är kortare än vanligt. Den begränsade färgpaletten är baserad på en kombination av rött (den dominerande färgen), blått och guld. Behandlingen av detaljer demonstrerar den perfekta smaken hos konstnären. Han kompletterar det invecklade dekorativa mönstret med flera figurer av fåglar (tuppar, härfåglar etc.) och ger kolumnernas kapitäl formen av en oxes eller ett lejons huvud. Både fåglarnas och djurens huvud, trots deras uppebara naturalism, har en ren dekorativ färgsättning.")

/mtd-cil-148-m.jpg "Although the motif of The Holy Communion (The Eucharist) connected with the theme of The Last Supper was widespread in Armenian fresco painting, it does not often occur in book illustration.<br>The miniature occupies the lower part of the page and, apart from the numerous gold initials, is the only decorative element. The miniature is flanked by draperies, as if to prevent the scene from overflowing onto the margins. The composition of the miniature is strictly balanced by the two symmetrical groups of figures united by the figure of Christ in the middle. The colouring is based on red, blue and gold. The pictorial treatment of the scene, especially in so far as the modelling of faces is concerned, is somewhat schematic and betrays a less competent hand than that which is apparent in The Magi before Herod. Even though the artist employs the more advanced technique of shading, he still resorts to the linear method.�Även om motiven med Nattvarden, kopplad till teman med Jesu sista måltid var utbrett i armenisk freskåmålning, förekommer den inte så ofta i bokmålningar. Miniatyren upptar den nedre delen av sidan och, förutom de otaliga guldinitialerna, är det enda dekorativa elementet. Miniatyren är flankerad av draperier som om för att hindra scenen från att spilla över till marginalerna. Miniatyrens komposition är strikt balanserad av de två symmetriska grupperna av figurer förenade av Kristus figur i mitten. Färgen är baserad på röd, blå och guld. Den bildliga behandlingen av scenen, speciellt vad det gäller modelleringen av ansikten, är något schematisk och avslöjar en mindre kompetent hand än den som producerade De vise männen hos Herodes. Introducing this symbol, the artist followed the well-known medieval practice of combining two motifs expressing the same general idea in one composition. Furthermore, one of the related motifs could be used as a substitute for another.<br>In this manuscript, as in many other Armenian illuminated books, ornamental decor occupies a prominent position: every miniature in the volume is surrounded by a framework of varied decorative patterns.�Det enda ovanliga draget hos denna i överigt ikonografisk konventionella komposition är dess runda utsmyckning som tjänar som en symbol för den sista nattvarden. Genom introduceringen av denna symbol följde konstnären den välkända medeltida vanan att kombinera två motiv som uttrycker en generell idé i en och samma komposition. Dessutom kan det ena av de inkluderade motiven användas som en ersättning för det andra. I detta manuskript, som i många andra armeniska illustrerade böcker, upptar utsmyckningen en viktig plats: varje miniatyr i volymen är omgiven av ett ramverk av olika dekorativa mönster.")
