Church/Monastery :: St Sarkis

Church of St Sarkis

Information

Bjni is located in the province of Kotayk, historically belonging to the house of Pahlavouni. The village played a significant role in medieval Armenian life.

The church of St Sarkis is located in the village of Bjni, on a sharp-end rock. It is a fine example of a series of well-known cruciform chapels and churches of small dimensions which has an exterior plan in the shape of a Greek cross with arms of equal length forming an outside tetraconch. This type was widely spread across Armenia during the seventh century.

Three cross-wings of the church are rectangle while the eastern one has a half-round apse. The church is built with fine pink colored tufa stone blocks and measures 3.35x2.95 metres in size. The frontal doors are solved restrained. The only entry is from western side. The church has been preserved almost intact, except the roof which was originally tiled, but has later been covered with stony slabs.

The church was essentially reconstructed during 1960s and 1970s.
