Gospels :: The Gospels (MS4814)
Highslide JS
The iconography of the miniature is similar to that of the Resurrection scene in the 1038 Gospels (MS6201). Its most remarkable feature is the presence of Christ risen from the dead, together with the soldiers guarding the tomb and with the Holy Women arriving at the sepulchre. A similar iconographic version, rare in Eastern Christian art, is to be found in the Simon Psalter, a Russian illuminated manuscript dating from the thirteenth century (known also as the Khludov Psalter, after its nineteenth-century owner Alexei Khludov, a Moscow merchant and collector), and also in some Syrian manuscripts. S. Der Nersessian regards this scene as an example of amalgamation of two or more motifs, typical of the Vaspourakan school.

In accordance with the contemporary Vaspurakan tradition which differed from the canonical scheme, the artist depicted St. John leaning upon his staff. The representation of St. Prochoros is likewise rather unusual - he is shown not as a youth, but as a middle-aged man with a beard and moustache.
