The general treatment of the scene corresponds to the iconographic tradition accepted at the time, deviating from it only in the representation of the angels, which are depicted floating in the air instead of standing on the river bank. Such an interpretation, unusual for medieval art, can be traced back to early Eastern Christian models. Closely related in this respect to the Matenadaran Gospels is the thirteenth-century Arabian manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris (Ms. 13).�Den allmänna behandlingen av scenen motsvarar den ikonografiska traditionen som var accepterad vid denna tid, avvikande från den endast i representationen av änglarna som är avbildade svävande i luften istället för stående vid flodstranden. Sådan tolkningen, ovanlig för medeltida konst, kan spåras tillbaka till tidiga österländska kristna modeller. Nära relaterad i detta avseende till Matenadarans Evengelierna är det arabiska manuskriptet från 1200-talet i Bibliotheque Nationale i Paris (Ms. 13).
