The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Samtidigt var Hovhannes inte helt fri från den gamla traditionens konventioner; en realistisk återgivning av en naken kropp var fortfarande bortom hans förmåga och behandlingen av vissa kompositionella detaljer återstod rätt schematiska, om inte naiva.")

Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

A certain dynamic quality is felt in the figure of St. John bending over the feet of Christ. The network of pink lines in the background resembles the binding of an earlier Tatev manuscript (now in the Etchmiadzin collection), where a similar network forms the background of the two relief-like figures representing Grigor Tatevatsi and John Vorotnetsi.�Det stikta symmetrin hos kompositionen bryts av figurerna av sörjande änglar som sträcker sig utanför scenens ram. En viss dynamisk kvalitet känns igen i figuren S:t Johannes som böjer sig över Kristus fötter. In accordance with the opening passages of the Gospel of St. Matthew, the artist begins with the \"genealogy\" of Christ, depicting Christ's ancestors. They are represented in lively and natural postures, the figure of King David seated on his throne being the most striking of all. These representations are incorporated into the text of the Gospels copied in the beautiful yerkatagir handwriting (uncial script with large characters).�Härmande kilikiska traditioner, Avag inkluderade illustrationer i evengelierna som inte bara var den menologiska cyckeln men även alla sekundära och intilliggande episoderna. I enlighet med öppningspassagen i S:t Matteus-evangeliet, börjar konstnären med Kristus \"härstamning\", avbildande Kristus förfäder. As far as the manner of representation is concerned, the artist combines two different artistic principles: while the treatment of the faces and hands betrays an attempt at rendering the effect of volume, the folds of the garments and the background remain somewhat schematic. The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. /mtd-cil-137-m.jpg "It is interesting to compare this miniature with The Raising of Lazarus by Toros Roslin in terms of the changes in the style of Cilician miniature which took place between 1260 and 1280. Roslin's interpretation included only a few essential figures, whereas the present version depicts numerous characters. G. Millet in his Recherches sur l'iconographie de Vevan-gile aux XIV, XV et XVI siecles d'apres les monuments de Mistra, de la Macedoine et du Mont-Athos (Paris, 1916), referring to the appearance (in some Italian and Armenian versions of this subject) of human figures behind the rock, characterized this icon-ographic type as evocative of Byzantine tradition. He explains the presence of these figures by the combination of the main motif with The Entry into Jerusalem. There is also a probability that the artist had in mind certain literary sources, depicting not a crowd of idle onlookers but a group of patriarchs and prophets hopefully watching the miracle from the \"kingdom of the dead\": according to some apocryphal sources and to the text of the Sharakan (an Armenian religious hymn), the raising of Lazarus gave them hope of salvation and deliverance from hell. The treatment of the figures shows the artist's concern for vivid and lifelike representation. Due to the subtle psychological nuances which he manages to convey, each of the characters bears a clear mark of individuality.�Det är intressant att jämföra denna miniatyren med Lazarus uppståndelse av Toros Roslin vad det gäller ändringar i stilen hos kilikiska miniatyren som skedde mellan 1260 och 1280. Roslins tolkning inkluderade endast ett fåtal nödvändiga figurer medan den nuvarande versionen avbildar flera personer. G.
