/mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The full-length representation in an upright attitude is apparently derived from the Byzantine tradition of portraying saints, while the ornamentation of the wide frame surrounding the figure reflects a typically Oriental taste for excessive decoration. The frame, apart from its purely decorative role, performs the important function of creating a visual link between the human figure and the marginal decor of the page, thus uniting the pictorial and decorative principles of illumination. The most remarkable feature of the decor is undoubtedly the treatment of the ornate initial, based on the motif of The Adoration of the Shepherds and composed of the figures of three shepherds, one blowing a pipe, the second carrying a sacrificial lamb, and the third about to perform the rite.�Dekoren hos sidan, uppenbarligen inspirerade av kilikiska modeller, bär den krimiska konstnärens egna märken: de dekorativa formerna är mer generaliserade än kilikiska exemplar, användningen av guld är mer sparsamt och bakgrunden är mörkblå. Det mest anmärkningsvärda draget hos dekoren är utan tvekan behandlingen av den utsmyckade initialen, baserad på motiv av Herdarnas tillbedjan och komponerad av de tre herdarnas figurer, en som blåser en pipa, den andre bärande ett offerlamm och en tredje på väg att utföra en ritual.")

The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres (see Pls. 104, 110). The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. Samtidigt avslöjar både miniatyrerna hans intresse i linjära design som manifesteras i den skapra avbildningen av klädernas veck och den någon grafiska karaktären hos representationen.
