Contrary to his usual practice of choosing laconic versions of the Gospel scenes, Toros Roslin depicts here a great number of figures connected with various subsidiary motifs. Thus, apart from the angels above the cave, the miniature includes the scenes of The Bathing of the Child, The Annunciation to the Shepherds and The Adoration of the Magi. This combination of several motifs irrespective of time and place, typical of medieval art, imparts to the scene a somewhat artificial character, which is on the whole unusual for Toros Roslin.<br>At the same time, the multifigured composition does not in any way impede the understanding of its message, since the focal point of the scene is made conspicuous by means of a contrast between the bright red cover of the Virgin's bed and the deep black mouth of the cave.�Från kompositionens perspektiv är denna en av de mest komplexa scenerna i manuskriptet. Till skillnad från hans vanliga vana att välja lakoniska versioner av evengeliescenerna, avbildar Toros Roslin här ett stort antal av figurerna som är kopplade till olika underliggande motiv. Därmed, förutom änglarna ovanför grottan, inkluderar miniatyren scener från Badandet av barnet, Herdarnas bebådelse och De vise männens vördnadsbetygelse. Denna kombination av olika motiv, utan hänsyn till till tid och plats, typisk för medeltida konst, skänker en någon artificiell karaktär åt scenen som i dess helhet är ovanligt för Toros Roslin. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. The figures of the Evangelists strike by the magnificence of their rich attire. In accordance with the Cilician tradition which obviously was known to the Crimean master, St. Luke is represented with St.Theophilos.<br>Besides his own contribution to the illustrative cycle, the artist did some careful renewing of the miniatures by his predecessor from Bologna.�Miniatyren porudcerades i Krim av en mästare vars konst är anmärkningsvärt för dess rafinering och skicklighet hos modelleringen av ansikten och för dess mjukhet och delikatessen hos hans palett. Evageliefigurerna är slående i deras magnifika rika klädsel. The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.

/mtd-gr-43-m.jpg "In accordance with the Vaspurakan tradition of the time, the accent in Vardan's interpretation of the Nativity is on the motif of The Adoration of the Magi. In the miniature, the Virgin and Child turn their heads to look at the approaching Magi. The laconic composition includes only the principal characters, represented against an almost blank background, with a summary indication of the setting. The drawing is both delicate and supple, and the contours are painted in light and dark shades of blue, which gives them a dynamic vividness. The light and airy treatment of the miniature produces the impression of a water-colour.�Enligt dåtidens tradition i Vaspourakan, finns tonfallet i Vardans tolkning av Jesu födelse i motivet hos De vise männens tillbedjan- I miniatyren vänder Jungfrun och barnet sina huvuden för att titta på de annalkande vise männen. Den ordknappa kompositionen inkluderar endast de viktiga karaktärerna, representerade mot en så gott som blank bakgrund och en sammanfattande indikation av scenbilden. Ritningen är både delikat och smidig och konturerna är målade med ljusa och mörka nyanser av blå, vilka ger dem en dynamisk livlighet. Den lätta och luftiga sammansättningen av miniatyren producerar intrycket av en vattenfärg.")

The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

Certain characteristics, however, rule out the possibility of attributing the manuscript to a Cilician master. Such is, for example, the free and sweeping manner of painting resulting in a somewhat generalized treatment of forms, typical of the north-east of historical Armenia.�Miniatyrerna i manuskriptet avslöjar inflytandet av kilikiansk konst som omfattar både ikonografin och tekniken.
