The many expressive devices used serve to accentuate the dramatic significance of the event. The composition is filled with pictorial details; the linear treatment based on the interlacing of curves creates a feeling of nervous anxiety; the figures are elongated to the point of distortion and do not correlate with each other in size; the gestures are intense and full of dynamism, the faces grave and sorrowful. A sense of drama is also conveyed in the colouring of the miniature, with its splashes of bright red and blue turning to purple.<br>At the same time, in spite of what appears to be an overprofu-sion of figures and details, the composition of the scene is maintained with the help of several vertical and horizontal lines (the Cross, the buildings in the background and the framing) which counterbalance the diagonal lines of the figures.�")

Contrary to his usual practice of choosing laconic versions of the Gospel scenes, Toros Roslin depicts here a great number of figures connected with various subsidiary motifs. Thus, apart from the angels above the cave, the miniature includes the scenes of The Bathing of the Child, The Annunciation to the Shepherds and The Adoration of the Magi. This combination of several motifs irrespective of time and place, typical of medieval art, imparts to the scene a somewhat artificial character, which is on the whole unusual for Toros Roslin.<br>At the same time, the multifigured composition does not in any way impede the understanding of its message, since the focal point of the scene is made conspicuous by means of a contrast between the bright red cover of the Virgin's bed and the deep black mouth of the cave.�Från kompositionens perspektiv är denna en av de mest komplexa scenerna i manuskriptet. Till skillnad från hans vanliga vana att välja lakoniska versioner av evengeliescenerna, avbildar Toros Roslin här ett stort antal av figurerna som är kopplade till olika underliggande motiv. Därmed, förutom änglarna ovanför grottan, inkluderar miniatyren scener från Badandet av barnet, Herdarnas bebådelse och De vise männens vördnadsbetygelse. Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

/mtd-cil-145-m.jpg "The artist combines in this version several chronologically incompatible scenes referring to the arrival of the Magi in Jerusalem: he shows the Magi as an isolated group; then as standing before Herod who questions them on the birthplace of Jesus and consults the learned men; finally, the Magi appear for the third time as leaving the town. The figure in the right-hand margin represents the Prophet Micah who is referred to by the learned men. The treatment of decorative and pictorial details in the miniature, of the marginal and the initial results in the stylistic uniformity of the overall design of the page. The artist displays a perfect command of figural representation -in spite of their small size, the figures are minutely elaborated, and their movements and postures are expressive and natural.�I denna version kombinerar konstnären flera kronologisk oförenliga scener referrerande till ankomsten av de vise männen till Jerusalem: han visar de vise männen som en isolerad grupp; sedan som stående framför Herodes som frågar dem om Jesus födelseplats och rådfrågar de lärda männen; slutgligen visas de vise männen för tredje gången som åkande från staden. Figuren i den högra sidan av marginalen representerar profeten Mika som tilltalas av en av de vise männen. Behandlingen av de dekorativa och bildliga detaljerna i miniatyren, hos marginalen och initialen resulterar i den stilistiska uniformiteten av den övergripande siddesignen. Det rör sig om evengelisternas porträtt och i en ännu högre grad om dekoren av den illustrerade sidorna. Figurerna i miniatyrerna förlorar sin milda elegans, färgerna är inte längre rika eller förfinade. Samtidigt kvarblir principerna för figurernas och ansiktenas behandling och traditionerna för det kompositionella arrangemanget hos scenen, ärvt från 1280-talet, så gott som intakt.

/mtd-dia-156-m.jpg "The large-scale monumental figures of the Virgin and Gabriel are shown against the background of a pale green wall and of a dark blue sky - a type of background frequently occurring in works by the Crimean miniaturists.<br>The painting was undoubtedly executed by a highly proficient master who had a perfect command of figural treatment and a gift for modelling details. The miniature is particularly remarkable for its rich colouring, dominated by saturated blues and violets.<br>The lower frame contains an inscription by the illustrator, with his name unfortunately thoroughly rubbed out - probably by the other of the two artists, who did not want to share the credit for the work with a rival master.�De storskaliga monumentala figurerna hos Jungfrun och Gabriel visas mot bakgrunden av en blek grön vägg och en mörkblå himmel - en typ av bakgrund som är ofta förekommande i verk av krimiska minityrmålare. Målningen av utan tvekan gjord av en högst skicklig mästare som hade en perfekt kontroll över figurritning och begåvad i modellering av detaljer. Miniatyren är i synnerhet utomordentlig för dess rika färgsättning, dominerad av mättade blåa och lila färger. Den undre delen innehåller en inskription av illustratören, med hans namn som är olyckligt nog helt utsuddat - förmodligen av en av de andra konstnärerna som inte ville dela äran för verket med en rivaliserande mästare.<br><br>")

The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.
