The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. /mtd-cil-150-m.jpg "The composition of the miniature is based on a balance between the two interrelated groups of figures, each of them characterized by complicated postures and varied movements (when the manuscript was rebound its top margins were cut off, and the upper part of the illustration was unfortunately lost). In terms of iconography this version is reminiscent of certain fragments from the scenes of The Descent from the Cross and The Entombment as rendered in the 1286 Lectionary. This probably indicates that the illustrators of these two manuscripts used the same iconographic model, but in the case of the 1320 Gospels this model was presented in a reduced version, probably for lack of space. On the whole, the comparison of the two versions is not to the advantage of the later one. The miniature in the \"Gospels by Eight Masters\" is characterized by a certain schematism and by an increased interest in the linear method. Besides, its colouring is less varied, while the use of shading in the modelling of faces and figures is rather limited and inadequate. The general decorative layout of the page, however, the treatment of certain details, and the skilful arrangement of figures are indicative of the artist's proficiency and taste.�Kompositionen hos miniatyren är baserad på en balans mellan de två sammankopplade grupperna av figurer, var och en karaktäriserad av kompliserade kroppshållningar och varierande rörelser (när manuskriptet bands om skars dess toppmarginal av och den övre delen av illustrationen har tyvärr gått förlorat). I termer av ikonografi påminner denna version om vissa fragmnet ur scenen Gravläggningen som återgavs i 1286 års Evangeliebok. Detta indikerar förmodligen att illustratörerna av dessa två manuskript använde samma ikonografiska modell, men hos 1320 års Evagelium presenterades denna modell i en reducerad version, förmodligen på grund av utrymmesbrist. I det hela är jämförelsen av de två versionerna ej till fördel av den senare. Mniatyren i \"Evangeliet av de åtta mästarna\" kännetecknas av ett visst schematism och av ett ökat intresse i den linjära metoden. Although the miniature is not limited by the usual rectangular frame, its composition is well-defined and complete in itself due to the compact arrangement of the figures which fit so neatly into the general scheme that the spaces between them (filled in with gold) are very small. The left lower part of the miniature shows the episode of The Cutting-off of the Ear of the High Priest's Slave.�Denna och den omedelbart efterföljande reproduktionen visar den tvåsidiga bilden innehållande illustrationer om episoder från Förrådandet och Kristus rättegång hos högsta prästerna. /mtd-cil-148-m.jpg "Although the motif of The Holy Communion (The Eucharist) connected with the theme of The Last Supper was widespread in Armenian fresco painting, it does not often occur in book illustration.<br>The miniature occupies the lower part of the page and, apart from the numerous gold initials, is the only decorative element. The miniature is flanked by draperies, as if to prevent the scene from overflowing onto the margins. The composition of the miniature is strictly balanced by the two symmetrical groups of figures united by the figure of Christ in the middle. The colouring is based on red, blue and gold. The pictorial treatment of the scene, especially in so far as the modelling of faces is concerned, is somewhat schematic and betrays a less competent hand than that which is apparent in The Magi before Herod. Even though the artist employs the more advanced technique of shading, he still resorts to the linear method.�Även om motiven med Nattvarden, kopplad till teman med Jesu sista måltid var utbrett i armenisk freskåmålning, förekommer den inte så ofta i bokmålningar. Miniatyren upptar den nedre delen av sidan och, förutom de otaliga guldinitialerna, är det enda dekorativa elementet. Miniatyren är flankerad av draperier som om för att hindra scenen från att spilla över till marginalerna. Miniatyrens komposition är strikt balanserad av de två symmetriska grupperna av figurer förenade av Kristus figur i mitten. Färgen är baserad på röd, blå och guld. Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. Figurerna står mot en utsmyckad bakgrund upplivad i mitten genom ett nästan realitiskt inslag - två bågar med noggrannt återgiven murbruk och avbrott med ett kil mellan dem. Den senare detaljen avslöjar händelsens arrangemang, som lär ha ägt rum vid brunnen. Samtidigt har Jungfrun en garnboll i handen, en hänsyftning till hennes uppväxt i Jerusalems tempel där hon skulle ha spinnt och vävt prästernas skrud. Miniatyren kombinerar därför två ikonografiska versioner av Bebådelsen - Bebådelsen vid brunnen (den apokryfiska versionen) och Bebådelsen vid templet.")
