Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. The figures are arranged almost symmetrically, in a frieze-like fashion, thus forming a well-balanced composition. The animation of the faces, the poses and gestures of the characters suggest that the artist sought to enliven the canonical scheme with details borrowed from real life.�Olik de flesta andra illustrerade miniatyrer i manuskriptet, tar denna scen inte upp en hel sida, utan är placerad under texten, i den nedre delen av sidan. /mtd-cil-132-m.jpg "In so far as virtuosity of execution and the striking variety of ornamentation are concerned, the only other Cilician illuminated manuscript which can stand comparison with this one is the 1286 Lectionary. None of the four khorans reproduced here repeat one another in the arrangement and choice of ornamental patterns. The only respect in which they are comparable is the general design of the entablature: in two of the four khorans the rectangular top is supplemented by an arch-shaped ornamental pattern.<br>The khoran on f. 5v is a striking example of the effectiveness of such a combination: here the entablature resting on three slender ornate columns is pierced by two parallel arches. The scale-like ornamentation of the arches produces a relief-like effect, especially against the background of the entablature whose remaining surface is adorned with an elaborate but flat foliate design incorporating zoomorphic and anthropomorphic motifs.<br>The khoran on f. 9v, with its elaborate guilloche ornamentation, betrays the hand of a typically Oriental master favouring endlessly repeated interlacing patterns. The key motif of this khoran is the rosette, which was extremely popular with Armenian book illustrators, sculptors and stone-carvers (it was, for example, widely used in the ornamentation of khatchkars). The figures of birds, animals and horsemen which are either ingeniously interwoven into the guilloche of the entablature or placed on top of it, are depicted with amazing skill and a truly realistic precision of detail.<br>The khoran on f. 8 is characterized by an extremely well-balanced arrangement of the decorative elements. Its rectangular top comprises an arch-shaped \"goffered\" band which rounds off the elaborate openwork pattern against the gold background of the headpiece. The decor is supplemented by an almost realistically treated figural motif (the ten partridges surmounting the headpiece).�Vad det gäller virtuositet hos utförandet och den slående variationen hos utsmyckningen är den enda andra kilikiska illustrerade minatyren som kan jämföras med denna är 1286 års evangeliebok. Ingen av de fyra khoranerna som har skapats här repeterar varandra i arrangemanget och valet av utsmyckningsmönster. Den enda aspketen som de kan jämföras i är den generella designen hos entablementet: i två av de fyra khornerna är den rektangulära toppen kompletterat med ett bågformat dekorativt mönster. khoranen hos f. 5v är ett slående exempel på effektiviteten hos sådan kombination: här vilar entablementet på tre smala dekorativa kolumner och är genomborrad av två parallella bågar. Den skalenliga utsmyckningen hos bågarna skapar en reliefliknande effekt, speciellt mot bakgrunden av etablementet vars övriga yta är prydd med en komplicerad men platt folierad design som omfattar djurlika och antropormofisiska motiv. /mtd-dia-158-m.jpg "Since the Apocalypse had long been relegated to apocryphal sources, it was not included into the biblical illustrative cycles until a relatively late date. The earliest Apocalypse illustrations found in Armenian illuminated manuscripts date from the late thirteenth (e.g. the 1269 Bible of Yerzynka) and the early fourteenth century (Lectionaries). This is also true for the miniature in question, which was executed at the end of the thirteenth century by an Armenian master in Bologna. The treatment of the subject here is rather unusual: the God's throne is surrounded not by the conventional elders (Rev. 4:4) but by youths.<br>The miniature is stylistically related to late thirteenth-century Byzantine illumination, and in so far as its artistic quality is concerned it ranks among the best samples of Armenian book painting. In addition to expensive pigments and gold, the artist also used silver which effectively sets off the dark silhouettes of the angels.�Då Apokalypsen hade länge hänförts apokryfiska källor, var den inte inlkuderad i de bibliska illustrativa kretsarna tills relativt senare datum. Den tidigaste apokalyptiska illustrasionerna som återfinns i armeniska illustrerade manuskript daterade till sent 1200-tal (t.ex. 1269 års Bibel från Yerzynka) och tidigt 1300-tal (Evangeliebok). Detta stämmer även för miniatyren i fråga, som skapades vid slutet av 1200-talet av en armenisk mästare i Bologna. The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.
