The saturated blue of the upper part of the miniature which serves to set off its compositional centre, the energetic outline of the rock which resembles a torn and crumpled strip of paper and serves as an expressive decorative element, and, finally, the flying cloak of Christ all create an atmosphere of intense and dynamic dramatism.�Scenen hittas ytterst sällsynt i armeniska illustratörers verk. Toros Roslins version av det i de malatianska evangelierna är genomsyrad av tragisk signifikans. Although the miniature is not limited by the usual rectangular frame, its composition is well-defined and complete in itself due to the compact arrangement of the figures which fit so neatly into the general scheme that the spaces between them (filled in with gold) are very small. The left lower part of the miniature shows the episode of The Cutting-off of the Ear of the High Priest's Slave.�Denna och den omedelbart efterföljande reproduktionen visar den tvåsidiga bilden innehållande illustrationer om episoder från Förrådandet och Kristus rättegång hos högsta prästerna. Även om miniatyren inte begränsas till den vanliga rektangulära ramen, dess kompisition är väldefinierad och komplett tack vare det kompakta arrangemanget av figurerna som passar så väl in i det generella schemat som utrymmet mellan dem (utfyllt med guld) är mycket små. The conglomeration of buildings seen behind the Evangelist is depicted, in the typically medieval manner, with the help of inverted perspective meant to render spatial depth. Both the buildings and the figure of the Evangelist are characterized by somewhat elongated proportions. The skilful treatment of the folds of St. Matthew's robe and the subtle tonal modelling of the face suggest that the artist was trained under a very competent master.�Miniatyren visar konstnärens intresse i arkitektoniska bakgrund, även uppenbart i andra manuskript tillhörande samma grupp som 1270 års Bibel. Anhopningen av byggnader som syns bakom evangelisterna är avbildad på ett typiskt medeltida sätt, med hjälp av omvänt perspektiv avsett för att återge ett spatialt djup. The Virgin is depicted sitting beside the cradle. The face looming near it represents Eve, whose appearance in the scene of The Nativity symbolizes redemption of the original sin. The same implication is probably attached to a miniature from a thirteenth-century Greek Gospel manuscript (Paris, Musee National, MS543), where the motif of The Fall is accompanied by the motif of The Nativity.�Scenens komposition är baserad på en arkaisk iconografisk modell vanligt i både den tidiga kristendomskonsten i Bysans och i den medeltida europeiska målningen. Jungfrun är avbildad sittande vid sidan om vaggan. Ansiktet som syns nära henne representerar Eva, vems närvaro i Kristi födelses scen symboliserar frälsningen från det ursprunliga syndet. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. The outline of the Cross serves as an important expressive element of the composition. /mtd-dia-163-m.jpg "Although the artist's cognomen - Anetsi - indicates that his native town was Ani (the medieval capital of Armenia), his creative work did not owe much to his homeland. His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. Hans miniatyrer visar en stor del av persiskt inflytande: karaktärerna har runda rosenkindade ansikten, smala mandelformade ögon och bågformade ögonbryn. /mtd-cil-138-m.jpg "The decor here is less sumptuous than in the title-pages of the 1286 Lectionary (see Pls. 132-135). It is more moderate and compact in its proportions. The marginal decoration on f. 20 contains an allegoric representation of the Tree of Jesse. S.Der Nersessian believes that this motif, which had long been popular in Western European art, became more and more widespread during the thirteenth century in the art of Eastern Christendom.<br>The ornate headpiece of the other folio (f. 107) is reminiscent of a lattice window through which dazzling sunlight breaks forth. The overall decor of the folio is made remarkably attractive and expressive by the contrast of the light openwork ornament with the solid figures of two fallow deer presented symmetrically, in a heraldic fashion, in the middle of the headpiece, and with the delicate ornamental design of the border.�Dekoren här är mindre praktfull än den i titelsidan hos 1286 års evangeliebok. Den är mer återhållsam och kompakt i sina proportioner. Dekorationen hos marginalerna hos f. 20 innehåller en allegorisk representation av Isais träd. S. Der Nersessian tror att detta motiv, som länge hade varit populär i västeuropeisk konst, spreds mer och mer i östlig kristen konst under 1200-talet.
