/mtd-cil-91-m.jpg "The tympanums of the arches decorating the rectangular entablatures of the khorans comprise half-length representations - of Eusebius and Carpianus (on the pages with the Letter), of the prophets and of Christ and the Virgin (above the Canon tables). While representations of Eusebius and Carpi-anus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S.Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S. The miniature is particularly remarkable for its rich colouring, dominated by saturated blues and violets.<br>The lower frame contains an inscription by the illustrator, with his name unfortunately thoroughly rubbed out - probably by the other of the two artists, who did not want to share the credit for the work with a rival master.�De storskaliga monumentala figurerna hos Jungfrun och Gabriel visas mot bakgrunden av en blek grön vägg och en mörkblå himmel - en typ av bakgrund som är ofta förekommande i verk av krimiska minityrmålare. Målningen av utan tvekan gjord av en högst skicklig mästare som hade en perfekt kontroll över figurritning och begåvad i modellering av detaljer. Miniatyren är i synnerhet utomordentlig för dess rika färgsättning, dominerad av mättade blåa och lila färger. The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

/mtd-cil-102-m.jpg "Whereas in The Descent from the Cross (PL 96) the artist emphasized the inner dramatism of the scene, in The Crucifixion he is more concerned with the motifs of sacrifice and redemption, and in his attempt to convey the latter he endows the otherwise mournful scene with a certain touch of elation. This is achieved by the soft colouring excluding all contrasting colours, as well as by the treatment of the principal characters. The allegories of Ecclesia and Synagogue which were quite a novelty in the Armenian miniature at the time were borrowed by the artist from Byzantine and Western European art.�Medan i Nedstigningen från korset (PL96) har konstnären betonat den inre dramatiken i scenen, är han i Korsfästelsen mer mån om motiven för uppoffring och botgöring och i sitt försök att uttrycka den senare skänker han en viss upprymdhet till den i övrigt sorgsna scenen. Detta uppnås genom den mjuka färgsättningen så väl som genom behandlingen av huvudkaraktärerna. Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

Their rectangular headpieces are filled with iloral ornament whose intricate design incorporates small figures of birds and animals. The artist increases the number of columns from the usual three or four to five and sometimes seven, and occasionally introduces human figures flanking the headpieces. In this case, we have the artist's self-portrait.�Den mest slående detaljen hos illustrationen i detta manuskript är dess komposition och dekor av dess stora khoraner. Deras rektangulära överstycken är fyllda med utsmyckningar vars invecklade design inkluderar små figurer av fåglar och djur. The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres (see Pls. 104, 110). The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. Samtidigt avslöjar både miniatyrerna hans intresse i linjära design som manifesteras i den skapra avbildningen av klädernas veck och den någon grafiska karaktären hos representationen. Thus, the facial type of the Evangelist, his somewhat heavy figure, the technique of face-modelling, and, finally, the choice of red, dark blue and dove-grey for the decoration of the framework go back to earlier models. But as interpreted by an artist working in the last decade of the century, there is a noticeable deterioration in almost all pictorial elements which lose their original harmonious integrity. This is especially evident in the simplified treatment of the figure, in the awkwardness of the posture, in the crude colouring and in the schematic linear design.�Stilen hos miniatyren påminner om vissa drag hos kilikiska bokmåleriet under 1280-talet. Därför är ansiktsuttrycken hos evangelisten, hans något tunga figur, tekniken hos ansiktsmodelleringen och slutgligen, valet av rött, mörkblå och duvgrått för dekorationen av ramverket går tillbaka till tidigare modeller.
