The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

Although the general effect is two-dimensional, the figures and details of the setting stand out clearly against the gold background. The main group is formed by Mary, St.Joseph<br>and the angel, the figure of the Virgin serving as the compositional centre.<br>The colour range which, together with the above-mentioned contrast of dark blue and gold, also includes delicate violet tints and bright patches of red, gives a jubilant note to the miniature.�Den kompakta karaktären hos kompositionen är till en större del på grund av dess färgsättning, baserad på den skarpa kontrasten mellan det gyllene halon runt Jungfruns huvud och den djupt mättade blåa färgen hos bakgrunden som representerar grottan öppning. Även om den allmänna effekten är tvådimensionellt, sticker figurerna och detaljerna tydligt ut mot den gyllene bakgrunden. Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.

/mtd-cil-148-m.jpg "Although the motif of The Holy Communion (The Eucharist) connected with the theme of The Last Supper was widespread in Armenian fresco painting, it does not often occur in book illustration.<br>The miniature occupies the lower part of the page and, apart from the numerous gold initials, is the only decorative element. The miniature is flanked by draperies, as if to prevent the scene from overflowing onto the margins. The composition of the miniature is strictly balanced by the two symmetrical groups of figures united by the figure of Christ in the middle. The colouring is based on red, blue and gold. The pictorial treatment of the scene, especially in so far as the modelling of faces is concerned, is somewhat schematic and betrays a less competent hand than that which is apparent in The Magi before Herod. Even though the artist employs the more advanced technique of shading, he still resorts to the linear method.�Även om motiven med Nattvarden, kopplad till teman med Jesu sista måltid var utbrett i armenisk freskåmålning, förekommer den inte så ofta i bokmålningar. Miniatyren upptar den nedre delen av sidan och, förutom de otaliga guldinitialerna, är det enda dekorativa elementet. Miniatyren är flankerad av draperier som om för att hindra scenen från att spilla över till marginalerna. Miniatyrens komposition är strikt balanserad av de två symmetriska grupperna av figurer förenade av Kristus figur i mitten. Färgen är baserad på röd, blå och guld. Den bildliga behandlingen av scenen, speciellt vad det gäller modelleringen av ansikten, är något schematisk och avslöjar en mindre kompetent hand än den som producerade De vise männen hos Herodes. Även om konstnären använder den mer avancerade tekninken med skuggning, förlitar has sig fortfarande på den linjära metoden.")

The miniatures of Hrstakes are usually stylized to such an extent that the forms of the figures, the folds of their garments, the details of the setting, etc. are subordinated to the all-important linear effect and are therefore perceived as purely ornamental details. At the same time, in spite of the limited palette, composed mainly of green and red with occasional additions of blue and brown, his miniatures impress one by the harmony of their colouring and the skilfully balanced composition.�Återigen har vi här två scener illustrerande Kristi mirakel - ett motiv som var extremt populär hos Vaspourakans miniatyrmålare - lagts ihop på en sida. Miniatyrerna av Hrstakes är vanligen så pass stiliserade att formerna hos figurerna, vecken hos deras kläder, detaljerna hos arrangemanget etc. är underordnade den viktiga linjära effekten och är därför ansedda som rent dekorativa detaljer. Samtidigt, trots den begränsade paletten, komponerad i huvudsak med grönt och rött och bitvis tillägg av blått och brunt, imponerar hans miniatyrer en genom harmonin hos deras färgsättning och den skickligt balanserade kompositionen.")
