Their rectangular headpieces are filled with iloral ornament whose intricate design incorporates small figures of birds and animals. The artist increases the number of columns from the usual three or four to five and sometimes seven, and occasionally introduces human figures flanking the headpieces. In this case, we have the artist's self-portrait.�Den mest slående detaljen hos illustrationen i detta manuskript är dess komposition och dekor av dess stora khoraner. Deras rektangulära överstycken är fyllda med utsmyckningar vars invecklade design inkluderar små figurer av fåglar och djur. Although the general style of the few marginals, headpieces and initials in this Bible is undoubtedly related to that of the 1286 Lectionary, the decor as such is much more modest, and the small slanting script gives an altogether different appearance to the illuminated folios.�Även om den allmänna stilen hos de få marginalerna, överstycken och initialerna i denna bibel är utan tvekan relaterade till det hos 1286 års Evangeliebok, är dekoren betydligt mer sparsamt och den mindre lutande skriften ger ett övergripande annat utseende till de illustrerade sidorna.

/mtd-dia-157-m.jpg "The decor of the folio, obviously inspired by Cilician models, bears the mark of the Crimean artist's own manner: the ornamental forms are more generalized than their Cilician counterparts, the use of gold is more sparing, and the background is dark blue. The most remarkable feature of the decor is undoubtedly the treatment of the ornate initial, based on the motif of The Adoration of the Shepherds and composed of the figures of three shepherds, one blowing a pipe, the second carrying a sacrificial lamb, and the third about to perform the rite.�Dekoren hos sidan, uppenbarligen inspirerade av kilikiska modeller, bär den krimiska konstnärens egna märken: de dekorativa formerna är mer generaliserade än kilikiska exemplar, användningen av guld är mer sparsamt och bakgrunden är mörkblå. The illumination of this Lectionary is in many ways similar to that of the 1365 manuscript and was probably done by the same masters - Arakel and Kirakos.�Målningen hos denna evangeliebok är på många sätt lik den hos 1365 års manuskript och var förmodligen utfört av samma mästare: Arakel och Kirakos.

The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres (see Pls. 104, 110). The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. The marginal decoration on f. 20 contains an allegoric representation of the Tree of Jesse. S.Der Nersessian believes that this motif, which had long been popular in Western European art, became more and more widespread during the thirteenth century in the art of Eastern Christendom.<br>The ornate headpiece of the other folio (f. 107) is reminiscent of a lattice window through which dazzling sunlight breaks forth. The overall decor of the folio is made remarkably attractive and expressive by the contrast of the light openwork ornament with the solid figures of two fallow deer presented symmetrically, in a heraldic fashion, in the middle of the headpiece, and with the delicate ornamental design of the border.�Dekoren här är mindre praktfull än den i titelsidan hos 1286 års evangeliebok. Den är mer återhållsam och kompakt i sina proportioner. Dekorationen hos marginalerna hos f. 20 innehåller en allegorisk representation av Isais träd. S.
