/mtd-cil-129-m.jpg "The miniature conveys a feeling of anxiety and apprehension as reflected in the gestures of the archangel, in the general rhythm of forms, and in the spatial arrangement and colouring. The latter is rich and varied, and the colours are applied in a carpet-like fashion, leaving very little room for gold. Even though the paint layer is not in a very good state of preservation, most of the blues being altogether lost, the colouring of the miniature retains its expressiveness. As elsewhere in this manuscript, the artist uses here his favourite quiet reddish tints, effectively set off by occasional patches of dark red. In so far as iconography is concerned the miniature deviates in some ways from traditional models. Thus, the scroll of parchment in the archangel's hand (instead of the more customary staff) and the crown on the Virgin's head are unusual for Armenian Gospel manuscripts and are due, according to S. Der Nersessian, to the influence of Western European art.�Miniatyren förmedlar en känsla av ångest och ängslan som reflekteras i ärkeängelns kroppshållning, i formernas allmänna rytm och i det spatiall arrangemanget och färgsättningen. Den senare är rik och variernade och färgerna är applicerade i ett mattliknande sätt och lämnar väldigt litet utrymme för guld. Även om färglagret inte är i så gott skick, det mesta av den blåa färgen borta, bibehåller färgsättningen hos miniatyren sin uttryckfullhet. /mtd-cil-117-m.jpg "These exquisitely decorated title-pages give an idea of the exceptional richness of decor typical of the manuscript as a whole.<br>The system of illumination of the title-pages and first pages of the Gospels was elaborated in the course of the development of Cilician art by several generations of miniaturists. It included as a rule three essential elements: the ornamental headpiece, the marginal running lengthwise from top to bottom, and the initial composed of ornamental motifs or of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures. The title-pages of the 1286 Lectionary are examples of this system at its best. Their decor, apart from elaborate ornamental patterns, contains human and animal figures which are treated as organic elements of the overall decorative scheme. Among the former, we most often find the Four Evangelists and the Old Testament prophets, as well as other characters whose appearance is justified by the contents of the corresponding chapters. As for the animal figures, many are utterly irrelevant to the subject-matter as such and are introduced merely for the sake of decora-tiveness, as monsters, dragons, monkeys, three-faced creatures and so on.<br>The richness of decoration displayed in the Lectionary was not only due to the artist's exuberant imagination, but also to his excellent knowledge of local and Byzantine models, natural in a Cilician artist, and above all to his familiarity with the art of China, Persia, Egypt and Western Europe. Furthermore, he must have been well acquainted with various artistic crafts, particularly with jewellery-making, judging from the peculiar relief technique of his ornamentation where certain details are brought out with the help of thick layers of special paste covered with paint or gold.<br>Every one of the title-pages displays a unique combination of ornamental motifs and colours, each time creating a new artistic image.�")

Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

/mtd-dia-158-m.jpg "Since the Apocalypse had long been relegated to apocryphal sources, it was not included into the biblical illustrative cycles until a relatively late date. The earliest Apocalypse illustrations found in Armenian illuminated manuscripts date from the late thirteenth (e.g. the 1269 Bible of Yerzynka) and the early fourteenth century (Lectionaries). This is also true for the miniature in question, which was executed at the end of the thirteenth century by an Armenian master in Bologna. The treatment of the subject here is rather unusual: the God's throne is surrounded not by the conventional elders (Rev. 4:4) but by youths.<br>The miniature is stylistically related to late thirteenth-century Byzantine illumination, and in so far as its artistic quality is concerned it ranks among the best samples of Armenian book painting. In addition to expensive pigments and gold, the artist also used silver which effectively sets off the dark silhouettes of the angels.�Då Apokalypsen hade länge hänförts apokryfiska källor, var den inte inlkuderad i de bibliska illustrativa kretsarna tills relativt senare datum. Den tidigaste apokalyptiska illustrasionerna som återfinns i armeniska illustrerade manuskript daterade till sent 1200-tal (t.ex. 1269 års Bibel från Yerzynka) och tidigt 1300-tal (Evangeliebok). Detta stämmer även för miniatyren i fråga, som skapades vid slutet av 1200-talet av en armenisk mästare i Bologna. Behandlingen av ämnet här är ganska ovanligt: Guds tron är inte omringad av de konventionella äldre (Uppenbarelsboken 4:4) utan av yngre. Miniatyren är stilistisk relaterad till sent 1200-tals bysantinsk målning och vad det gäller dess artistiska kvalitet så räknas den till ett av de bästa exemplaren av armenisk bokmålning. The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.

Their rectangular headpieces are filled with iloral ornament whose intricate design incorporates small figures of birds and animals. The artist increases the number of columns from the usual three or four to five and sometimes seven, and occasionally introduces human figures flanking the headpieces. In this case, we have the artist's self-portrait.�Den mest slående detaljen hos illustrationen i detta manuskript är dess komposition och dekor av dess stora khoraner. /mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. I sin helhet visar porträtten konstnärens försök att bryta med det rådande medeltida trenden av en schematisk behandling av karaktärer, avbildande istället en konkret person.
