Just as in The Thirty Pieces of Silver by the same master (P1.40), the treatment of the scene verges on the grotesque and at the same time is characterized by the naive directness of folk art. The ugly faces of Judas and the guards undoubtedly reflect the artist's negative attitude to this group of characters. The compositional principle of the miniature consists in the strictly balanced rhythmical arrangement not only of the forms and movements of the figures, but also of the colours.
