The name of Kirakos is associated with the appearance of a new trend in the Vaspurakan school of book painting. The main distinctive feature characterizing works by Kirakos and his followers consists in the emphasis on linear treatment.�Namnet Kirakos är associerat med uppkomsten av en ny trend hos vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. Den huvudsakliga särdraget som kännetecknar Kirakos verk och det hos hans efterföljare är betoningen på den linjära kompositionen.

Thus, the facial type of the Evangelist, his somewhat heavy figure, the technique of face-modelling, and, finally, the choice of red, dark blue and dove-grey for the decoration of the framework go back to earlier models. But as interpreted by an artist working in the last decade of the century, there is a noticeable deterioration in almost all pictorial elements which lose their original harmonious integrity. This is especially evident in the simplified treatment of the figure, in the awkwardness of the posture, in the crude colouring and in the schematic linear design.�Stilen hos miniatyren påminner om vissa drag hos kilikiska bokmåleriet under 1280-talet. Därför är ansiktsuttrycken hos evangelisten, hans något tunga figur, tekniken hos ansiktsmodelleringen och slutgligen, valet av rött, mörkblå och duvgrått för dekorationen av ramverket går tillbaka till tidigare modeller. The restrained colour range is based on a combination of red (the prevalent colour), blue and gold. The treatment of details demonstrates the perfect taste of the illuminator. He supplements the intricate ornamental patterns with numerous figures of birds (cocks, hoopoes, etc.) and gives the columns' capitals the shape of ox or lion heads. Both the birds and the animal heads, despite their apparent naturalism, have a purely decorative colouring.�Konstnären ger företräde till storskaliga element och design och kolumnerna hos hans khoran är kortare än vanligt. Den begränsade färgpaletten är baserad på en kombination av rött (den dominerande färgen), blått och guld. Behandlingen av detaljer demonstrerar den perfekta smaken hos konstnären. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The many expressive devices used serve to accentuate the dramatic significance of the event. The composition is filled with pictorial details; the linear treatment based on the interlacing of curves creates a feeling of nervous anxiety; the figures are elongated to the point of distortion and do not correlate with each other in size; the gestures are intense and full of dynamism, the faces grave and sorrowful. A sense of drama is also conveyed in the colouring of the miniature, with its splashes of bright red and blue turning to purple.<br>At the same time, in spite of what appears to be an overprofu-sion of figures and details, the composition of the scene is maintained with the help of several vertical and horizontal lines (the Cross, the buildings in the background and the framing) which counterbalance the diagonal lines of the figures.�")

/mtd-cil-126-m.jpg "The miniatures in the Gospels are stylistically related to those in the 1286 Lectionary, which means that they were either executed by one and the same master or at least produced at the same scriptorium.<br>The compositional arrangement of this scene is based on several large-scale figures, whose exaggerated size, dynamic postures and curved silhouettes contribute to the dramatic expressiveness of the miniature.<br>The landscape is stylized and treated as part of the overall decorative design of the illustration.<br>The study of the paint layer (which is here in a better state of preservation than in the other illustrations of this manuscript) enables us to judge of the original colouring and of the artist's favourite colour combinations. Although his palette does not include pure local colours, it is rich in various saturated hues, like pink, grey and greenish- or brownish-red.�Miniatyrerna i evangeliet är stilistisk relaterade till de i 1286 års Evangeliebok, som innebär att de var antingen gjorda av samma mästare eller åtminstone producerade vid samma skriptorium. /mtd-cil-95-m.jpg "Although the motif of The Last Judgement occurred frequently in early Armenian frescoes, it did not appear in illuminated manuscripts until the thirteenth century when it was taken up by Cilician book illustrators, Toros Roslin among them. In the Malatian Gospels we find a concise version of the scene treated in a grand and solemn manner, which is manifest in the strict symmetry of the composition. The three principal figures are supported by the subsidiary groups creating a rhythmical pattern. The dramatic element is enhanced by the colouring based on dense saturated tones.�Även om motivet för Yttersta domen förekom ofta i tidiga armeniska freskomåleri dök det inte upp i illustrerade manuskript förrän 1200-talet när det upptogs av kilikiska båkmålare, bl.a. Toros Roslin. I de malatianska evangelierna hittar vi en kortfattad version av scenen, behandlad i en storartad och högtidlig manér, vilket framgår i den strikta symmetrin hos kompositionen. As far as the manner of representation is concerned, the artist combines two different artistic principles: while the treatment of the faces and hands betrays an attempt at rendering the effect of volume, the folds of the garments and the background remain somewhat schematic. Such dual character of representation was on the whole characteristic of the Crimean miniature.�Scenen är behandlad i enlighet med det välkända kanoniska schemat. The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.
