Thus, the facial type of the Evangelist, his somewhat heavy figure, the technique of face-modelling, and, finally, the choice of red, dark blue and dove-grey for the decoration of the framework go back to earlier models. But as interpreted by an artist working in the last decade of the century, there is a noticeable deterioration in almost all pictorial elements which lose their original harmonious integrity. This is especially evident in the simplified treatment of the figure, in the awkwardness of the posture, in the crude colouring and in the schematic linear design.�Stilen hos miniatyren påminner om vissa drag hos kilikiska bokmåleriet under 1280-talet. Därför är ansiktsuttrycken hos evangelisten, hans något tunga figur, tekniken hos ansiktsmodelleringen och slutgligen, valet av rött, mörkblå och duvgrått för dekorationen av ramverket går tillbaka till tidigare modeller. Such an interpretation, unusual for medieval art, can be traced back to early Eastern Christian models. Closely related in this respect to the Matenadaran Gospels is the thirteenth-century Arabian manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris (Ms. 13).�Den allmänna behandlingen av scenen motsvarar den ikonografiska traditionen som var accepterad vid denna tid, avvikande från den endast i representationen av änglarna som är avbildade svävande i luften istället för stående vid flodstranden. Simeon Ardjishetsi was the first to broaden the range of motifs included in the menological cycle. This pictorial cycle, with certain variations, is to be found in the Vaspourakan illuminated manuscripts up to the fifteenth century.�Simeon Ardjishetsi var den första som beredde spektrumet av motiv som inkluderas i menologiska cyckeln. /mtd-cil-139-m.jpg "The decor here is less sumptuous than in the title-pages of the 1286 Lectionary. It is more moderate and compact in its proportions. The marginal decoration on f. 20 contains an allegoric representation of the Tree of Jesse. S. Der Nersessian believes that this motif, which had long been popular in Western European art, became more and more widespread during the thirteenth century in the art of Eastern Christendom.<br>The ornate headpiece of the other folio (f. 107) is reminiscent of a lattice window through which dazzling sunlight breaks forth. The overall decor of the folio is made remarkably attractive and expressive by the contrast of the light openwork ornament with the solid figures of two fallow deer presented symmetrically, in a heraldic fashion, in the middle of the headpiece, and with the delicate ornamental design of the border.�Dekoren här är mindre praktfull än den i titelsidan hos 1286 års evangeliebok. Den är mer återhållsam och kompakt i sina proportioner. Dekorationen hos marginalerna hos f. 20 innehåller en allegorisk representation av Isais träd. S. Der Nersessian tror att detta motiv, som länge hade varit populär i västeuropeisk konst, spreds mer och mer i östlig kristen konst under 1200-talet. /mtd-gr-43-m.jpg "In accordance with the Vaspurakan tradition of the time, the accent in Vardan's interpretation of the Nativity is on the motif of The Adoration of the Magi. In the miniature, the Virgin and Child turn their heads to look at the approaching Magi. The laconic composition includes only the principal characters, represented against an almost blank background, with a summary indication of the setting. The drawing is both delicate and supple, and the contours are painted in light and dark shades of blue, which gives them a dynamic vividness. The light and airy treatment of the miniature produces the impression of a water-colour.�Enligt dåtidens tradition i Vaspourakan, finns tonfallet i Vardans tolkning av Jesu födelse i motivet hos De vise männens tillbedjan- I miniatyren vänder Jungfrun och barnet sina huvuden för att titta på de annalkande vise männen. Den ordknappa kompositionen inkluderar endast de viktiga karaktärerna, representerade mot en så gott som blank bakgrund och en sammanfattande indikation av scenbilden. Ritningen är både delikat och smidig och konturerna är målade med ljusa och mörka nyanser av blå, vilka ger dem en dynamisk livlighet. Den lätta och luftiga sammansättningen av miniatyren producerar intrycket av en vattenfärg.")

/mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.
