The large-scale figure of the seated Virgin tends to fill the entire page. The deep, dark colours of her robes make a striking contrast with the pale pink tone of the background, so that the latter acquires a light airiness, in spite of the intricate ornamentation patterns.<br>This type of representation - a full-face frontal view of the Virgin and Child - was frequent in early Christian art and can be found in many Armenian wall reliefs of the fourth to seventh centuries.�Miniatyren visar den monumentala kavaliteten som är typisk för många scener i manuskriptet (jmfr. Bebådelsen s. 25). Den stora figuren av den sittande Jungfrun tenderar att fylla hela sidan. De djupa mörka färgerna hos hennes skrud skapar en slående kontrast mot den bleka rosa ronen i bakgrunden, så att den senare får en lätt tunnhet, trots de invecklade utsmyckningsmönstren. /mtd-cil-95-m.jpg "Although the motif of The Last Judgement occurred frequently in early Armenian frescoes, it did not appear in illuminated manuscripts until the thirteenth century when it was taken up by Cilician book illustrators, Toros Roslin among them. In the Malatian Gospels we find a concise version of the scene treated in a grand and solemn manner, which is manifest in the strict symmetry of the composition. The three principal figures are supported by the subsidiary groups creating a rhythmical pattern. The dramatic element is enhanced by the colouring based on dense saturated tones.�Även om motivet för Yttersta domen förekom ofta i tidiga armeniska freskomåleri dök det inte upp i illustrerade manuskript förrän 1200-talet när det upptogs av kilikiska båkmålare, bl.a. Toros Roslin. I de malatianska evangelierna hittar vi en kortfattad version av scenen, behandlad i en storartad och högtidlig manér, vilket framgår i den strikta symmetrin hos kompositionen. De tre huvudfigurerna stöds av de andra grupperna som skapar ett rytmiskt mönster. Det dramatiska elementet förstärks av färgsättningen baserad på de tätta mättade tonerna.")

The treatment of the characters is remarkable for the delicately outlined ovals of their faces, without the dark contours typical of the majority of Armenian miniatures. The soft and delicate pictorial treatment is accompanied here by a freedom of figural arrangement and an obvious interest in rendering the visual effect of space and volume.�Inte bara bearbetnigssättet, utan även ansiktstyperna i denna miniatyr är utan tvivel tagna från bysantinsk konst. Behandlingen av karaktärerna är utomordentliga för sin delikat skissade ovala ansiktena, utan de mörka konturerna som är typiska för majoriteten av armeniska miniatyrer. The 1332 Gospels belongs to the small group of Crimean/Armenian manuscripts whose illumination was inspired by the art of the Palaeologan Renaissance.
The miniatures in the manuscript easily fall into two groups representing the work of two different masters, one of them probably being Grigor Sukiasants who is mentioned in the colophon as the scribe of the book.�1332 års Evengeliebok tillhör den lilla gruppen av Krim-armeniska manuskript vilkas målninagr inspirerades av konsten hos Palaeologiska renässansen. Miniatyrerna i gruppen faller enkelt i två grupper, representerade av verket tillhörande två olika mästare, avvilka en var förmodligen Grigor Sukiasants som omnämns i kolofonen som författare till boken.

The figures of the Evangelists strike by the magnificence of their rich attire. In accordance with the Cilician tradition which obviously was known to the Crimean master, St. Luke is represented with St.Theophilos.<br>Besides his own contribution to the illustrative cycle, the artist did some careful renewing of the miniatures by his predecessor from Bologna.�Miniatyren porudcerades i Krim av en mästare vars konst är anmärkningsvärt för dess rafinering och skicklighet hos modelleringen av ansikten och för dess mjukhet och delikatessen hos hans palett. Evageliefigurerna är slående i deras magnifika rika klädsel. I enlighet med den kilikiska traditionen som uppenbarligen var känd för den krimiska mästaren, är S:t Lukas representerad med S:t Theophilus. Förutom sitt eget bidrag till den illustrativa cirkeln, har konstnären gjort några försiktiga förnyanden i miniatyrerna skapade av hans föregångare i Bologna.")

The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.

The decline of Cilician miniature art towards the end of the thirteenth century is quite evident in this manuscript. It concerns the Evangelists' portraits and to an even greater extent the decor of the illuminated folios. The figures in the miniatures lose their suave elegance, the colours are no longer rich or refined. At the same time the main principles of figural and facial treatment and the traditions of the compositional arrangement of the scenes, inherited from the 1280s, remain almost unchanged.�Nedgången hos kilikisk miniatyr mot slutet av 1200-talet är rätt uppenbart i detta manuskript. Det rör sig om evengelisternas porträtt och i en ännu högre grad om dekoren av den illustrerade sidorna. Figurerna i miniatyrerna förlorar sin milda elegans, färgerna är inte längre rika eller förfinade. Samtidigt kvarblir principerna för figurernas och ansiktenas behandling och traditionerna för det kompositionella arrangemanget hos scenen, ärvt från 1280-talet, så gott som intakt.
