/mtd-dia-160-m.jpg "This miniature serves as a perfect illustration of Hovhannes's style. His greatest success in so far as this scene is concerned is the image of the Virgin. The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Samtidigt var Hovhannes inte helt fri från den gamla traditionens konventioner; en realistisk återgivning av en naken kropp var fortfarande bortom hans förmåga och behandlingen av vissa kompositionella detaljer återstod rätt schematiska, om inte naiva.")

Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

The Virgin and St. John are represented as two almost identical figures: both their dress and their attitudes are alike. At the same time their symmetrical positions on either side of the Cross and the dark colour of their garments, which sets them off emphatically against the neutral background, contribute to the atmosphere of grave solemnity created by the miniature.�Enligt en historisk ikonografisk tradition är Kristus kropp på korset sträckt (utan böjda knän) och hans huvud är endast något lutande åt ena sidan. Jungfrun och S:t John finns representerade som nästan två identiska figurer: både deras dräkter coh deras attityder är lika. Samtidigt bidrar deras symmetriska positioner på var sin sida av Korset och den mörka färgen hos deras kläder, som skiljer dem eftertryckligt gentemot den neutrala bakgrunden, till den atmosfär av ytterst högtidlighet skapad av miniatyren.")

The space within the framework, instead of containing the text of the letter of Eusebius or the Canon tables, is filled with an ornamental pattern of crescent-shaped, pointed and swirling leaves. The pattern is similar to those used in the Moush Homilarium and in the 1201 Gospels and is also evocative of the wall reliefs in the monastery of Airivank where the manuscript was produced.�Behandlingen av khoranen är något ovanligt. Utrymmet mellan ramverket, istället för att omfatta texten hos brevet från Eusebius eller texten för kanonskriften, är fylld med ett utsmyckningsmönster av halvmånsformade, spetsiga och virvlande löv. Mönstret är likt de som använts i Moush homilarium och i 1201 års Evangelium och påminner även om väggrelieferna i klostret Airivank där manuskriptet porducerades.")

/mtd-dia-163-m.jpg "Although the artist's cognomen - Anetsi - indicates that his native town was Ani (the medieval capital of Armenia), his creative work did not owe much to his homeland. His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. Hans miniatyrer visar en stor del av persiskt inflytande: karaktärerna har runda rosenkindade ansikten, smala mandelformade ögon och bågformade ögonbryn. Deras kläder påminner om ljusfärgade orientaliska ämbetsdräkter fästa med en bältesgördel; även utsmyckningen hos ramverket, påminnande om persiskt kakel, har definitivt smak av Orienten.")

Although the general style of the few marginals, headpieces and initials in this Bible is undoubtedly related to that of the 1286 Lectionary, the decor as such is much more modest, and the small slanting script gives an altogether different appearance to the illuminated folios.�Även om den allmänna stilen hos de få marginalerna, överstycken och initialerna i denna bibel är utan tvekan relaterade till det hos 1286 års Evangeliebok, är dekoren betydligt mer sparsamt och den mindre lutande skriften ger ett övergripande annat utseende till de illustrerade sidorna.

The large-scale figure of the seated Virgin tends to fill the entire page. The deep, dark colours of her robes make a striking contrast with the pale pink tone of the background, so that the latter acquires a light airiness, in spite of the intricate ornamentation patterns.<br>This type of representation - a full-face frontal view of the Virgin and Child - was frequent in early Christian art and can be found in many Armenian wall reliefs of the fourth to seventh centuries.�Miniatyren visar den monumentala kavaliteten som är typisk för många scener i manuskriptet (jmfr. Bebådelsen s. 25). Den stora figuren av den sittande Jungfrun tenderar att fylla hela sidan. De djupa mörka färgerna hos hennes skrud skapar en slående kontrast mot den bleka rosa ronen i bakgrunden, så att den senare får en lätt tunnhet, trots de invecklade utsmyckningsmönstren. Denna typ av representation - en helansiktes frpntvy av Jungfrun och barnet - var vanligt förekommande i många armeniska väggreliefer under 300- till 600-talen.")
