/mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. I sin helhet visar porträtten konstnärens försök att bryta med det rådande medeltida trenden av en schematisk behandling av karaktärer, avbildande istället en konkret person. Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.

The outline of the Cross serves as an important expressive element of the composition. The marginal decoration on f. 20 contains an allegoric representation of the Tree of Jesse. S. Der Nersessian believes that this motif, which had long been popular in Western European art, became more and more widespread during the thirteenth century in the art of Eastern Christendom.<br>The ornate headpiece of the other folio (f. 107) is reminiscent of a lattice window through which dazzling sunlight breaks forth. The overall decor of the folio is made remarkably attractive and expressive by the contrast of the light openwork ornament with the solid figures of two fallow deer presented symmetrically, in a heraldic fashion, in the middle of the headpiece, and with the delicate ornamental design of the border.�Dekoren här är mindre praktfull än den i titelsidan hos 1286 års evangeliebok. Den är mer återhållsam och kompakt i sina proportioner. Dekorationen hos marginalerna hos f. 20 innehåller en allegorisk representation av Isais träd. S. /mtd-cil-111-m.jpg "The ornamentation of the headpiece is based on a pattern of interlacing red lines which form pentagonal and octagonal stars standing out against the gold background in a kind of decorative lattice. The use of black aimed at giving prominence to the pattern emphasizes the glow of the gold and imparts an additional splendour to the decor of the headpiece. The treatment of the ornamental patterns in this and other manuscripts of the same school is much more detailed and elaborate than in the miniatures produced at Hromkla. The marginal ornamentation on this page may serve as a good example. It is based on a very complicated pattern in which every subsequent motif grows, as it were, out of the one preceding it: thus, the foliate design incorporates various figures; the interlacing bands support human heads crowned by the figures of birds, whose tails form new interlacing bands, and so on. Worthy of attention is the script which, apart from the usual ornate initial, is composed of large ornamental characters incorporating zoomorphic and geometric elements.�Överstyckets utsmyckning är baserad på ett mönster av sammanflätade röda linjer som formar fem- och åttasidiga stjärnor som står ut mot den gyllene bakgrunden i ett dekorativt galler. Användningen av svart som är menat att ge tyngd till mönstret betonar glöden hos guldet och skänker ytterligare skönhet till dekoren hos överstycket. Behandlingen av de dekorativa mönstren i detta och andra manuskript från samma skola är mycket mer detaljerade och ingående än i miniatyrer producerade i Hromkla. Marginalutsmyckningen på denna sida kan tjäna som ett gott exempel. The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. Figurerna står mot en utsmyckad bakgrund upplivad i mitten genom ett nästan realitiskt inslag - två bågar med noggrannt återgiven murbruk och avbrott med ett kil mellan dem. Den senare detaljen avslöjar händelsens arrangemang, som lär ha ägt rum vid brunnen. Samtidigt har Jungfrun en garnboll i handen, en hänsyftning till hennes uppväxt i Jerusalems tempel där hon skulle ha spinnt och vävt prästernas skrud. Miniatyren kombinerar därför två ikonografiska versioner av Bebådelsen - Bebådelsen vid brunnen (den apokryfiska versionen) och Bebådelsen vid templet.")

Kneeling before the Virgin and the Infant Christ are the donors who commissioned the work. The dark and saturated colours of the miniatures are enlivened by the bright red hues of the Virgin's robe and cloak. The dress and facial types of the donors are of considerable interest with regard to ethnography and history of costume.�Miniatyren placeras under den något blygsamt dekorerade kanoniska texterna som fyller ut sidan huvud. På sina knän framför JUngfrun och Jesubarnet finns donatorer som avlönade verket. De mörka och mättade färgerna hos miniatyrerna livas upp med de ljusröda nyanserna hos Jungfruns skrud och kappa. Kläderna och ansiktsuttrycken hos donatorerna är av ytterst intresse med avseende på etnografin och historien hos kläderna.")
