The decline of Cilician miniature art towards the end of the thirteenth century is quite evident in this manuscript. It concerns the Evangelists' portraits and to an even greater extent the decor of the illuminated folios. The figures in the miniatures lose their suave elegance, the colours are no longer rich or refined. At the same time the main principles of figural and facial treatment and the traditions of the compositional arrangement of the scenes, inherited from the 1280s, remain almost unchanged.�Nedgången hos kilikisk miniatyr mot slutet av 1200-talet är rätt uppenbart i detta manuskript. Det rör sig om evengelisternas porträtt och i en ännu högre grad om dekoren av den illustrerade sidorna. Figurerna i miniatyrerna förlorar sin milda elegans, färgerna är inte längre rika eller förfinade. Samtidigt kvarblir principerna för figurernas och ansiktenas behandling och traditionerna för det kompositionella arrangemanget hos scenen, ärvt från 1280-talet, så gott som intakt.

/mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. While representations of Eusebius and Carpianus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S. Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S. Der Nerssesian, blev de vid förekommande i armeniska och i synnerhet i kilikiska bokmålerier endast under 1200-talet), är porträtt av det Gamla Testamentets profeter i Evangeliernas manuskript ändå rätt sällsynt. /mtd-cil-137-m.jpg "It is interesting to compare this miniature with The Raising of Lazarus by Toros Roslin in terms of the changes in the style of Cilician miniature which took place between 1260 and 1280. Roslin's interpretation included only a few essential figures, whereas the present version depicts numerous characters. G. Millet in his Recherches sur l'iconographie de Vevan-gile aux XIV, XV et XVI siecles d'apres les monuments de Mistra, de la Macedoine et du Mont-Athos (Paris, 1916), referring to the appearance (in some Italian and Armenian versions of this subject) of human figures behind the rock, characterized this icon-ographic type as evocative of Byzantine tradition. He explains the presence of these figures by the combination of the main motif with The Entry into Jerusalem. There is also a probability that the artist had in mind certain literary sources, depicting not a crowd of idle onlookers but a group of patriarchs and prophets hopefully watching the miracle from the \"kingdom of the dead\": according to some apocryphal sources and to the text of the Sharakan (an Armenian religious hymn), the raising of Lazarus gave them hope of salvation and deliverance from hell. The treatment of the figures shows the artist's concern for vivid and lifelike representation. Due to the subtle psychological nuances which he manages to convey, each of the characters bears a clear mark of individuality.�Det är intressant att jämföra denna miniatyren med Lazarus uppståndelse av Toros Roslin vad det gäller ändringar i stilen hos kilikiska miniatyren som skedde mellan 1260 och 1280.
