Epilogue
|
The reigns of these kings in Armenia heralded a period of development, progress and strength. They were compelled to fight a number of recurring wars, primarily against the Seleucids and then against the Arsacids, who had, since the year 140 B.C., established a stronghold in southern Armenia. These kings succeeded in settling the outcomes of these wars in such a way as to enable them to maintain the independence of the country.
Strabon, who wrote that the reign of King Artashes I was characterised by war, pointed out that Armenia was still under the protection of Rome who continued to support it as a counterbalance to the Seleucid kings in Syria. This was despite the fact that the Armenian king had given shelter to Hannibal, the arch enemy of Rome.
The kings who sat on the throne of Armenia during the two first centuries before the birth of the Christ were the real creators of Armenia. They defended the new administrative system against the invasions of their neighbours and laid the foundation for the creation of a homogenous, mighty and prosperous government. It was these kings who paved the way for Tigran II and created the basis for the great new kingdom.
