/mtd-gr-32-m.jpg "The anonymous artist must have actually met Grigor Tatevatsi, celebrated scholar, philosopher and artist, otherwise it is hard to account for the almost naturalistic details in the portrait, for instance the half-closed lid of the left eye, probably the result of an illness. On the whole, the portrait betrays the artist's attempt to break with the prevalent medieval tendency towards a schematic treatment of characters, depicting instead a concrete person. The portrait, which agrees with a recorded description of the scholar's appearance, was regarded at the time as an authentic likeness, painted from life. It was therefore copied by different artists over the years; some later copies have been preserved.�Den anonyma konstnären måste faktiskt ha mött Grigor Tatevatsi, en berömd vetenskapsman, filosof och konstnär, annars är det svårt att förklara de nästan naturtrogna detaljerna i porträtten, t.ex. den halvstängda ögonlocket på det vänstra ögat, förmodligen resultatet av en sjukdom. The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. Figurerna står mot en utsmyckad bakgrund upplivad i mitten genom ett nästan realitiskt inslag - två bågar med noggrannt återgiven murbruk och avbrott med ett kil mellan dem. Den senare detaljen avslöjar händelsens arrangemang, som lär ha ägt rum vid brunnen. Samtidigt har Jungfrun en garnboll i handen, en hänsyftning till hennes uppväxt i Jerusalems tempel där hon skulle ha spinnt och vävt prästernas skrud. The treatment of the characters is remarkable for the delicately outlined ovals of their faces, without the dark contours typical of the majority of Armenian miniatures. The soft and delicate pictorial treatment is accompanied here by a freedom of figural arrangement and an obvious interest in rendering the visual effect of space and volume.�Inte bara bearbetnigssättet, utan även ansiktstyperna i denna miniatyr är utan tvivel tagna från bysantinsk konst. Behandlingen av karaktärerna är utomordentliga för sin delikat skissade ovala ansiktena, utan de mörka konturerna som är typiska för majoriteten av armeniska miniatyrer. The 1332 Gospels belongs to the small group of Crimean/Armenian manuscripts whose illumination was inspired by the art of the Palaeologan Renaissance.
The miniatures in the manuscript easily fall into two groups representing the work of two different masters, one of them probably being Grigor Sukiasants who is mentioned in the colophon as the scribe of the book.�1332 års Evengeliebok tillhör den lilla gruppen av Krim-armeniska manuskript vilkas målninagr inspirerades av konsten hos Palaeologiska renässansen. Miniatyrerna i gruppen faller enkelt i två grupper, representerade av verket tillhörande två olika mästare, avvilka en var förmodligen Grigor Sukiasants som omnämns i kolofonen som författare till boken.

The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. As a rule, the Gospel episodes are represented by fragments or key symbols corresponding to certain scenes or motifs. Thus, a chalice symbolizes the Baptism, a shepherd blowing a pipe - the Nativity, etc. The Entry into Jerusalem is one of the few scenes presented in greater detail than the rest. The miniature is placed in the right outer margin, elements of the composition intruding between the lines. The whole page thus creates an impression of compositional integrity, in which the text and the illustration naturally supplement and visually support each other.�Flera marginalillustrationer i manuskriptet kompenserar för avsaknanden av hisidiga illustrerade miniatyrer. Som regel är evengeliernas episoder representerade av fragment eller nyckelsymboler som motsvarar vissa scener eller motiv. Därför betyder en kalk dopet, ett herde som blåser på ett rör - Jesu födelse etc. Intåget till Jerusalem är en av de få scener som finns presenterad i större deltaj än resten. Miniatyren är placerad i den högra yttre marginalen, element hos den komposition som tränger mellan linjerna. Hela sidan skapar därför ett intryck av kompositionell integritet, i vilket texten och illustrationen naturligt kompletterar och visuellt stödjer varandra.")

The miniature is particularly remarkable for its rich colouring, dominated by saturated blues and violets.<br>The lower frame contains an inscription by the illustrator, with his name unfortunately thoroughly rubbed out - probably by the other of the two artists, who did not want to share the credit for the work with a rival master.�De storskaliga monumentala figurerna hos Jungfrun och Gabriel visas mot bakgrunden av en blek grön vägg och en mörkblå himmel - en typ av bakgrund som är ofta förekommande i verk av krimiska minityrmålare. Målningen av utan tvekan gjord av en högst skicklig mästare som hade en perfekt kontroll över figurritning och begåvad i modellering av detaljer. The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

Miniatyrerna är märkvärdiga för den känslomässiga dynamiken hos deras komposition och för deras skarpa och uttrycksfulla ögon och målade drag hos karaktärerna, avbildade i det livliga och lediga sättet hos folkkonst.
