/mtd-cil-131-m.jpg "The traditional austere solemnity of the Ascension scene, created first and foremost by its strictly symmetrical composition, is somewhat disturbed in this version due to the nervously expressive postures of the apostles and the dynamic movements of the flying angels.<br>Unfortunately the almost complete loss of blues in the paint layer impedes an adequate appreciation of the original colouring of the miniature and diminishes its overall emotional impact. We may try to visualize the original colouring with the help of the few preserved patches of blue. The colour combinations must have been refined and exquisite, including the contrasting shades of dark blue, pinkish-violet and gold. In all other miniatures in this manuscript the illuminator shows himself as a fine colourist with a rich and effective palette dominated by a wide range of violet and lilac shades.�Den traditionella spartanska högtidligheten hos scenen om Kristi himmelsfärd, skapad först och främst genom dess slående symmetriska komposition, är något störd i denna version på grund av den nervöst uttrycka kroppshållningen hos apostlarna och de dynamiska rörelserna hos de flygande änglarna. Tyvärr hämamr den så gott som totala förlusten av den blåa färgen en tillfredsställande uppskattning av den originella färgsättningen hos miniatyren och förringar dess känslomässiga intryck. Vi må försöka visualisera den ursprungliga färgsättningen med hjälp av de få bevarade bitarna av blå. The miniatures of Hrstakes are usually stylized to such an extent that the forms of the figures, the folds of their garments, the details of the setting, etc. are subordinated to the all-important linear effect and are therefore perceived as purely ornamental details. At the same time, in spite of the limited palette, composed mainly of green and red with occasional additions of blue and brown, his miniatures impress one by the harmony of their colouring and the skilfully balanced composition.�Återigen har vi här två scener illustrerande Kristi mirakel - ett motiv som var extremt populär hos Vaspourakans miniatyrmålare - lagts ihop på en sida. Miniatyrerna av Hrstakes är vanligen så pass stiliserade att formerna hos figurerna, vecken hos deras kläder, detaljerna hos arrangemanget etc. är underordnade den viktiga linjära effekten och är därför ansedda som rent dekorativa detaljer. The treatment of the scene, however, is in tune with the master's usual grotesque and somewhat naive manner. The setting for the figures is provided by a framework of arch-shaped ornamental bands reminiscent of an architectural construction, which, together with the rhythmically balanced arrangement of the figures, imparts a theatrical touch to the scene.�Ovsian var den ende 1300-tals minityrmålaren i Vaspourakan som har inspirerats av motiv rörande Judas samvetskval. Återgivningen av scenen är dock i linje med mästarens vanliga groteska och någorlunda naiva sätt. Scenbilden för figurerna anskaffas av ett ramverk av bågformade utsmyckningar som påminner om en arkitektonisk konstruktion, vilken, tillsammans med det rytmisk balanserande arrangemanget of figurerna återger en teatrisk ton till scenen.")

Kirakos chooses a laconic version which includes only the principal participants in the event: Christ standing between Moses and Elijah and the apostles lying prostrate before the vision. The artist's palette is likewise limited, consisting of only a few pure colours. The name of Kirakos is associated with the appearance of a new trend in the Vaspurakan school of book painting. The main distinctive feature characterizing works by Kirakos and his followers consists in the emphasis on linear treatment.�Namnet Kirakos är associerat med uppkomsten av en ny trend hos vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. Den huvudsakliga särdraget som kännetecknar Kirakos verk och det hos hans efterföljare är betoningen på den linjära kompositionen.

Contrary to the predominant iconographic convention the Infant Christ is depicted as stepping forward to meet St. Simeon. A similar archaic treatment is to be found in a carved ivory diptych dating from the seventh or eighth century in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The ornamentation decorating the pillars and the dome of the temple plays a key role in the miniature.�De tolv rapphönsen som krönar templet symboliserar apostlarna. Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.
