The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. Their rectangular headpieces are filled with iloral ornament whose intricate design incorporates small figures of birds and animals. The artist increases the number of columns from the usual three or four to five and sometimes seven, and occasionally introduces human figures flanking the headpieces. In this case, we have the artist's self-portrait.�Den mest slående detaljen hos illustrationen i detta manuskript är dess komposition och dekor av dess stora khoraner. Deras rektangulära överstycken är fyllda med utsmyckningar vars invecklade design inkluderar små figurer av fåglar och djur. Konstnären ökar antalet kolumner från det vanliga tre eller fyra till fem och ibland även sju och ibland introducerar mänskliga figurer stående vid sidan av överstycket. /mtd-dia-156-m.jpg "The large-scale monumental figures of the Virgin and Gabriel are shown against the background of a pale green wall and of a dark blue sky - a type of background frequently occurring in works by the Crimean miniaturists.<br>The painting was undoubtedly executed by a highly proficient master who had a perfect command of figural treatment and a gift for modelling details. The miniature is particularly remarkable for its rich colouring, dominated by saturated blues and violets.<br>The lower frame contains an inscription by the illustrator, with his name unfortunately thoroughly rubbed out - probably by the other of the two artists, who did not want to share the credit for the work with a rival master.�De storskaliga monumentala figurerna hos Jungfrun och Gabriel visas mot bakgrunden av en blek grön vägg och en mörkblå himmel - en typ av bakgrund som är ofta förekommande i verk av krimiska minityrmålare. Målningen av utan tvekan gjord av en högst skicklig mästare som hade en perfekt kontroll över figurritning och begåvad i modellering av detaljer. Miniatyren är i synnerhet utomordentlig för dess rika färgsättning, dominerad av mättade blåa och lila färger. Den undre delen innehåller en inskription av illustratören, med hans namn som är olyckligt nog helt utsuddat - förmodligen av en av de andra konstnärerna som inte ville dela äran för verket med en rivaliserande mästare.<br><br>")

The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

/mtd-cil-150-m.jpg "The composition of the miniature is based on a balance between the two interrelated groups of figures, each of them characterized by complicated postures and varied movements (when the manuscript was rebound its top margins were cut off, and the upper part of the illustration was unfortunately lost). In terms of iconography this version is reminiscent of certain fragments from the scenes of The Descent from the Cross and The Entombment as rendered in the 1286 Lectionary. This probably indicates that the illustrators of these two manuscripts used the same iconographic model, but in the case of the 1320 Gospels this model was presented in a reduced version, probably for lack of space. On the whole, the comparison of the two versions is not to the advantage of the later one. The miniature in the \"Gospels by Eight Masters\" is characterized by a certain schematism and by an increased interest in the linear method. Besides, its colouring is less varied, while the use of shading in the modelling of faces and figures is rather limited and inadequate. The general decorative layout of the page, however, the treatment of certain details, and the skilful arrangement of figures are indicative of the artist's proficiency and taste.�Kompositionen hos miniatyren är baserad på en balans mellan de två sammankopplade grupperna av figurer, var och en karaktäriserad av kompliserade kroppshållningar och varierande rörelser (när manuskriptet bands om skars dess toppmarginal av och den övre delen av illustrationen har tyvärr gått förlorat). I termer av ikonografi påminner denna version om vissa fragmnet ur scenen Gravläggningen som återgavs i 1286 års Evangeliebok. Detta indikerar förmodligen att illustratörerna av dessa två manuskript använde samma ikonografiska modell, men hos 1320 års Evagelium presenterades denna modell i en reducerad version, förmodligen på grund av utrymmesbrist. I det hela är jämförelsen av de två versionerna ej till fördel av den senare. The combination of red, blue (or sometimes green) and gold, so typical of Cilician illumination, is supported here by a wide range of delicate pastel tints including pale lilac, soft violet, greyish-blue, ash-grey, cherry-red and light green. Kirakos chooses a laconic version which includes only the principal participants in the event: Christ standing between Moses and Elijah and the apostles lying prostrate before the vision. The artist's palette is likewise limited, consisting of only a few pure colours. The name of Kirakos is associated with the appearance of a new trend in the Vaspurakan school of book painting. The main distinctive feature characterizing works by Kirakos and his followers consists in the emphasis on linear treatment.�Namnet Kirakos är associerat med uppkomsten av en ny trend hos vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. Den huvudsakliga särdraget som kännetecknar Kirakos verk och det hos hans efterföljare är betoningen på den linjära kompositionen.

The treatment of the characters is remarkable for the delicately outlined ovals of their faces, without the dark contours typical of the majority of Armenian miniatures. The soft and delicate pictorial treatment is accompanied here by a freedom of figural arrangement and an obvious interest in rendering the visual effect of space and volume.�Inte bara bearbetnigssättet, utan även ansiktstyperna i denna miniatyr är utan tvivel tagna från bysantinsk konst. The 1332 Gospels belongs to the small group of Crimean/Armenian manuscripts whose illumination was inspired by the art of the Palaeologan Renaissance.
The miniatures in the manuscript easily fall into two groups representing the work of two different masters, one of them probably being Grigor Sukiasants who is mentioned in the colophon as the scribe of the book.�1332 års Evengeliebok tillhör den lilla gruppen av Krim-armeniska manuskript vilkas målninagr inspirerades av konsten hos Palaeologiska renässansen. Miniatyrerna i gruppen faller enkelt i två grupper, representerade av verket tillhörande två olika mästare, avvilka en var förmodligen Grigor Sukiasants som omnämns i kolofonen som författare till boken.
