Although the miniature is not limited by the usual rectangular frame, its composition is well-defined and complete in itself due to the compact arrangement of the figures which fit so neatly into the general scheme that the spaces between them (filled in with gold) are very small. The left lower part of the miniature shows the episode of The Cutting-off of the Ear of the High Priest's Slave.�Denna och den omedelbart efterföljande reproduktionen visar den tvåsidiga bilden innehållande illustrationer om episoder från Förrådandet och Kristus rättegång hos högsta prästerna. Även om miniatyren inte begränsas till den vanliga rektangulära ramen, dess kompisition är väldefinierad och komplett tack vare det kompakta arrangemanget av figurerna som passar så väl in i det generella schemat som utrymmet mellan dem (utfyllt med guld) är mycket små. Den lägre vänstra delen av miniatyren visar episoden med skärandet örat på översteprästens slav.")

/mtd-cil-89-m.jpg "The portrait displays the most characteristic features of the medieval approach: the strictly frontal view of the figure, the rigid, erect attitude, the conventional position of the arms and, finally, the schematic treatment of the face which is almost utterly devoid of any portrait characteristics. The only element which imparts a certain measure of realism to the miniature is the Prince's dress imitating the traditional attire of Armenian kings, with regard to its general design and colour. Similar representations of the royal garments, accurately conveying the precious, richly ornamented material of which they were made, frequently occur in Armenian miniatures and wall paintings from the tenth century onwards.�Porträttet visar det mest karaktäristiska tännetecknet hos den medeltida stilen: den strikta frontvyn hos figuren, den rigida resta attityden, den konventionella positionen hos armar och slutligen den schematiska behandlingen av ansiktet som är nästan ytterst utan några som helst portsättkaraktärer. Contrary to his usual practice of choosing laconic versions of the Gospel scenes, Toros Roslin depicts here a great number of figures connected with various subsidiary motifs. Thus, apart from the angels above the cave, the miniature includes the scenes of The Bathing of the Child, The Annunciation to the Shepherds and The Adoration of the Magi. This combination of several motifs irrespective of time and place, typical of medieval art, imparts to the scene a somewhat artificial character, which is on the whole unusual for Toros Roslin.<br>At the same time, the multifigured composition does not in any way impede the understanding of its message, since the focal point of the scene is made conspicuous by means of a contrast between the bright red cover of the Virgin's bed and the deep black mouth of the cave.�Från kompositionens perspektiv är denna en av de mest komplexa scenerna i manuskriptet. Till skillnad från hans vanliga vana att välja lakoniska versioner av evengeliescenerna, avbildar Toros Roslin här ett stort antal av figurerna som är kopplade till olika underliggande motiv. Därmed, förutom änglarna ovanför grottan, inkluderar miniatyren scener från Badandet av barnet, Herdarnas bebådelse och De vise männens vördnadsbetygelse. Denna kombination av olika motiv, utan hänsyn till till tid och plats, typisk för medeltida konst, skänker en någon artificiell karaktär åt scenen som i dess helhet är ovanligt för Toros Roslin. Samtidigt hämmar flerfigurskompositionen inte på något sätt förståelsen av dess innebörd, då scenens brännpunkt har gjorts iögonfallande genom kontrasten mellan ljusa röda täcket på Jungfruns säng och grottans djupa svarta öppning.")

The figure in the right-hand margin represents the Prophet Micah who is referred to by the learned men. The treatment of decorative and pictorial details in the miniature, of the marginal and the initial results in the stylistic uniformity of the overall design of the page. The artist displays a perfect command of figural representation -in spite of their small size, the figures are minutely elaborated, and their movements and postures are expressive and natural.�I denna version kombinerar konstnären flera kronologisk oförenliga scener referrerande till ankomsten av de vise männen till Jerusalem: han visar de vise männen som en isolerad grupp; sedan som stående framför Herodes som frågar dem om Jesus födelseplats och rådfrågar de lärda männen; slutgligen visas de vise männen för tredje gången som åkande från staden. Figuren i den högra sidan av marginalen representerar profeten Mika som tilltalas av en av de vise männen. Behandlingen av de dekorativa och bildliga detaljerna i miniatyren, hos marginalen och initialen resulterar i den stilistiska uniformiteten av den övergripande siddesignen. In the miniature, the Virgin and Child turn their heads to look at the approaching Magi. The laconic composition includes only the principal characters, represented against an almost blank background, with a summary indication of the setting. The drawing is both delicate and supple, and the contours are painted in light and dark shades of blue, which gives them a dynamic vividness. The light and airy treatment of the miniature produces the impression of a water-colour.�Enligt dåtidens tradition i Vaspourakan, finns tonfallet i Vardans tolkning av Jesu födelse i motivet hos De vise männens tillbedjan- I miniatyren vänder Jungfrun och barnet sina huvuden för att titta på de annalkande vise männen. Den ordknappa kompositionen inkluderar endast de viktiga karaktärerna, representerade mot en så gott som blank bakgrund och en sammanfattande indikation av scenbilden. Ritningen är både delikat och smidig och konturerna är målade med ljusa och mörka nyanser av blå, vilka ger dem en dynamisk livlighet. Den lätta och luftiga sammansättningen av miniatyren producerar intrycket av en vattenfärg.")

The treatment of the characters is remarkable for the delicately outlined ovals of their faces, without the dark contours typical of the majority of Armenian miniatures. The soft and delicate pictorial treatment is accompanied here by a freedom of figural arrangement and an obvious interest in rendering the visual effect of space and volume.�Inte bara bearbetnigssättet, utan även ansiktstyperna i denna miniatyr är utan tvivel tagna från bysantinsk konst. Behandlingen av karaktärerna är utomordentliga för sin delikat skissade ovala ansiktena, utan de mörka konturerna som är typiska för majoriteten av armeniska miniatyrer. The 1332 Gospels belongs to the small group of Crimean/Armenian manuscripts whose illumination was inspired by the art of the Palaeologan Renaissance.
The miniatures in the manuscript easily fall into two groups representing the work of two different masters, one of them probably being Grigor Sukiasants who is mentioned in the colophon as the scribe of the book.�1332 års Evengeliebok tillhör den lilla gruppen av Krim-armeniska manuskript vilkas målninagr inspirerades av konsten hos Palaeologiska renässansen. Miniatyrerna i gruppen faller enkelt i två grupper, representerade av verket tillhörande två olika mästare, avvilka en var förmodligen Grigor Sukiasants som omnämns i kolofonen som författare till boken.
