The colophon of the Lectionary mentions the name of only one illuminator of the manuscript - Arakel. But comparison with a stylistically related manuscript signed by Kirakos (Venice, Mkhitarist Library, Monastery of St. Lazarus, MS904) seems to prove the latter's participation in illustrating the Crimean Lectionary.�Kolofonen hos evangelieboken nämner namnet för endast en målare, Arakel. Men jämförelse med ett stilistiskt relaterat manuskript signerat av Kirakos (Venedig, Mkhitaristbiblioteket, S:t Lazarus kloster, MS904) vekar bevisa att den senares deltagande i målningen av krimiska evangelieboken.

/mtd-dia-163-m.jpg "Although the artist's cognomen - Anetsi - indicates that his native town was Ani (the medieval capital of Armenia), his creative work did not owe much to his homeland. His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. Hans miniatyrer visar en stor del av persiskt inflytande: karaktärerna har runda rosenkindade ansikten, smala mandelformade ögon och bågformade ögonbryn. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. The Gospel manuscript copied in the fifteenth century was later supplemented with eight folios containing thirteenth- or fourteenth-century miniatures on Old and New Testament subjects.�Evangeliemanuskriptet som kopierades under 1400-talet kompletterades senare med åtta sidor innehållande 1200- eller 1300-tals miniatyrer om motiv ur Gamla och Nya testament.

Thus, the facial type of the Evangelist, his somewhat heavy figure, the technique of face-modelling, and, finally, the choice of red, dark blue and dove-grey for the decoration of the framework go back to earlier models. But as interpreted by an artist working in the last decade of the century, there is a noticeable deterioration in almost all pictorial elements which lose their original harmonious integrity. This is especially evident in the simplified treatment of the figure, in the awkwardness of the posture, in the crude colouring and in the schematic linear design.�Stilen hos miniatyren påminner om vissa drag hos kilikiska bokmåleriet under 1280-talet. Därför är ansiktsuttrycken hos evangelisten, hans något tunga figur, tekniken hos ansiktsmodelleringen och slutgligen, valet av rött, mörkblå och duvgrått för dekorationen av ramverket går tillbaka till tidigare modeller. Men som tolkad av en konstnär som arbetade under de senare decennierna i seklet, finns det anmärkningsvärda avvikelser i nästan alla bildliga element som förlorar sin ursprungliga harmoniska integritet. The figures of the Evangelists strike by the magnificence of their rich attire. In accordance with the Cilician tradition which obviously was known to the Crimean master, St. Luke is represented with St.Theophilos.<br>Besides his own contribution to the illustrative cycle, the artist did some careful renewing of the miniatures by his predecessor from Bologna.�Miniatyren porudcerades i Krim av en mästare vars konst är anmärkningsvärt för dess rafinering och skicklighet hos modelleringen av ansikten och för dess mjukhet och delikatessen hos hans palett. Evageliefigurerna är slående i deras magnifika rika klädsel. I enlighet med den kilikiska traditionen som uppenbarligen var känd för den krimiska mästaren, är S:t Lukas representerad med S:t Theophilus. The manuscript was begun in the thirteenth century in Bologna, Italy, and finished in 1368 in the Crimea. In the seventeenth century the initial parts of the Old Testament were rewritten and illuminated anew, also in the Crimea. Despite the different dates of their production the three sections of the manuscript produce a remarkably uniform impression due to the fact that each succeeding master apparently tried to remain faithful to the original stylistic principles.�Manuskriptet börjades under 1200-talet i Bologna, Italien och avslutades år 1368 i Krim. Under 1600-talet skrev man om initiala delarna till det Gamla Testamentet och målade om dem, även det i Krim. Trots olika produktionsdatum för de tre sektionerna skapar manuskriptet ett märkvärdigt unifotmt intryck på grund av det faktum att varje efterföljande mästare har tydligen försökt vara troget de ursprungliga stilistika principerna.
