In their treatment of these subjects the artists, although mainly relying upon the iconographic canon, sometimes offered their own interpretation. In accordance with the opening passages of the Gospel of St. Matthew, the artist begins with the \"genealogy\" of Christ, depicting Christ's ancestors. They are represented in lively and natural postures, the figure of King David seated on his throne being the most striking of all. These representations are incorporated into the text of the Gospels copied in the beautiful yerkatagir handwriting (uncial script with large characters).�Härmande kilikiska traditioner, Avag inkluderade illustrationer i evengelierna som inte bara var den menologiska cyckeln men även alla sekundära och intilliggande episoderna. I enlighet med öppningspassagen i S:t Matteus-evangeliet, börjar konstnären med Kristus \"härstamning\", avbildande Kristus förfäder. De är representerade i livliga och anturliga kroppshållningar; figuren kung David sitter på sitt tron och är den mest iögonfallande av dessa. The buildings, although schematically treated, resemble actually existing structures. The same applies to the chair on which the Evangelist is seated: similar wooden chairs are still in use in Armenian villages.�Evangelisten är avbildad i enlighet med konventionella riktlinjer antagna vid Siuniks skriptorium mot en vägg som separerar figurerna från byggnaderna som syns i bakgrunden. The saturated blue of the upper part of the miniature which serves to set off its compositional centre, the energetic outline of the rock which resembles a torn and crumpled strip of paper and serves as an expressive decorative element, and, finally, the flying cloak of Christ all create an atmosphere of intense and dynamic dramatism.�Scenen hittas ytterst sällsynt i armeniska illustratörers verk. Kneeling before the Virgin and the Infant Christ are the donors who commissioned the work. The dark and saturated colours of the miniatures are enlivened by the bright red hues of the Virgin's robe and cloak. The dress and facial types of the donors are of considerable interest with regard to ethnography and history of costume.�Miniatyren placeras under den något blygsamt dekorerade kanoniska texterna som fyller ut sidan huvud. På sina knän framför JUngfrun och Jesubarnet finns donatorer som avlönade verket. De mörka och mättade färgerna hos miniatyrerna livas upp med de ljusröda nyanserna hos Jungfruns skrud och kappa. Kläderna och ansiktsuttrycken hos donatorerna är av ytterst intresse med avseende på etnografin och historien hos kläderna.")

/mtd-cil-116-m.jpg "These exquisitely decorated title-pages give an idea of the exceptional richness of decor typical of the manuscript as a whole.<br>The system of illumination of the title-pages and first pages of the Gospels was elaborated in the course of the development of Cilician art by several generations of miniaturists. It included as a rule three essential elements: the ornamental headpiece, the marginal running lengthwise from top to bottom, and the initial composed of ornamental motifs or of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures. The title-pages of the 1286 Lectionary are examples of this system at its best. Their decor, apart from elaborate ornamental patterns, contains human and animal figures which are treated as organic elements of the overall decorative scheme. Among the former, we most often find the Four Evangelists and the Old Testament prophets, as well as other characters whose appearance is justified by the contents of the corresponding chapters. As for the animal figures, many are utterly irrelevant to the subject-matter as such and are introduced merely for the sake of decora-tiveness, as monsters, dragons, monkeys, three-faced creatures and so on.<br>The richness of decoration displayed in the Lectionary was not only due to the artist's exuberant imagination, but also to his excellent knowledge of local and Byzantine models, natural in a Cilician artist, and above all to his familiarity with the art of China, Persia, Egypt and Western Europe. Furthermore, he must have been well acquainted with various artistic crafts, particularly with jewellery-making, judging from the peculiar relief technique of his ornamentation where certain details are brought out with the help of thick layers of special paste covered with paint or gold.<br>Every one of the title-pages displays a unique combination of ornamental motifs and colours, each time creating a new artistic image.�")

/mtd-gr-77-m.jpg "The only unusual feature of this otherwise iconographically conventional composition is the round ornamental table which serves as a symbol of The Last Supper. Introducing this symbol, the artist followed the well-known medieval practice of combining two motifs expressing the same general idea in one composition. Furthermore, one of the related motifs could be used as a substitute for another.<br>In this manuscript, as in many other Armenian illuminated books, ornamental decor occupies a prominent position: every miniature in the volume is surrounded by a framework of varied decorative patterns.�Det enda ovanliga draget hos denna i överigt ikonografisk konventionella komposition är dess runda utsmyckning som tjänar som en symbol för den sista nattvarden. Genom introduceringen av denna symbol följde konstnären den välkända medeltida vanan att kombinera två motiv som uttrycker en generell idé i en och samma komposition. Dessutom kan det ena av de inkluderade motiven användas som en ersättning för det andra. I detta manuskript, som i många andra armeniska illustrerade böcker, upptar utsmyckningen en viktig plats: varje miniatyr i volymen är omgiven av ett ramverk av olika dekorativa mönster.")
