/mtd-cil-131-m.jpg "The traditional austere solemnity of the Ascension scene, created first and foremost by its strictly symmetrical composition, is somewhat disturbed in this version due to the nervously expressive postures of the apostles and the dynamic movements of the flying angels.<br>Unfortunately the almost complete loss of blues in the paint layer impedes an adequate appreciation of the original colouring of the miniature and diminishes its overall emotional impact. We may try to visualize the original colouring with the help of the few preserved patches of blue. The colour combinations must have been refined and exquisite, including the contrasting shades of dark blue, pinkish-violet and gold. In all other miniatures in this manuscript the illuminator shows himself as a fine colourist with a rich and effective palette dominated by a wide range of violet and lilac shades.�Den traditionella spartanska högtidligheten hos scenen om Kristi himmelsfärd, skapad först och främst genom dess slående symmetriska komposition, är något störd i denna version på grund av den nervöst uttrycka kroppshållningen hos apostlarna och de dynamiska rörelserna hos de flygande änglarna. Tyvärr hämamr den så gott som totala förlusten av den blåa färgen en tillfredsställande uppskattning av den originella färgsättningen hos miniatyren och förringar dess känslomässiga intryck. Vi må försöka visualisera den ursprungliga färgsättningen med hjälp av de få bevarade bitarna av blå. Färgkombinationerna måste ha varit raffinerade och utsökta, inklusive kontrasterande nyanser av mörkblå, rosa-lila och guld. I alla andra miniatyrer i manuskriptet visar illustratören sig själv som en skicklig färgsättare med rika och effektiva paletter, dominerade av stor bred av violet och lila nyanser.")

Kirakos chooses a laconic version which includes only the principal participants in the event: Christ standing between Moses and Elijah and the apostles lying prostrate before the vision. The artist's palette is likewise limited, consisting of only a few pure colours. Characteristically, all this enhances the dramatic eloquence of the composition.�Kristi förklaring var en av de med spridda och favoritmotiv som fanns hos Vaspourakans illustrerarde evangelierna. The name of Kirakos is associated with the appearance of a new trend in the Vaspurakan school of book painting. The main distinctive feature characterizing works by Kirakos and his followers consists in the emphasis on linear treatment.�Namnet Kirakos är associerat med uppkomsten av en ny trend hos vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. Den huvudsakliga särdraget som kännetecknar Kirakos verk och det hos hans efterföljare är betoningen på den linjära kompositionen.

As a rule, the Gospel episodes are represented by fragments or key symbols corresponding to certain scenes or motifs. Thus, a chalice symbolizes the Baptism, a shepherd blowing a pipe - the Nativity, etc. The Entry into Jerusalem is one of the few scenes presented in greater detail than the rest. The miniature is placed in the right outer margin, elements of the composition intruding between the lines. The whole page thus creates an impression of compositional integrity, in which the text and the illustration naturally supplement and visually support each other.�Flera marginalillustrationer i manuskriptet kompenserar för avsaknanden av hisidiga illustrerade miniatyrer. Som regel är evengeliernas episoder representerade av fragment eller nyckelsymboler som motsvarar vissa scener eller motiv. Därför betyder en kalk dopet, ett herde som blåser på ett rör - Jesu födelse etc. Intåget till Jerusalem är en av de få scener som finns presenterad i större deltaj än resten. Miniatyren är placerad i den högra yttre marginalen, element hos den komposition som tränger mellan linjerna. Hela sidan skapar därför ett intryck av kompositionell integritet, i vilket texten och illustrationen naturligt kompletterar och visuellt stödjer varandra.")

The large-scale figure of the seated Virgin tends to fill the entire page. The deep, dark colours of her robes make a striking contrast with the pale pink tone of the background, so that the latter acquires a light airiness, in spite of the intricate ornamentation patterns.<br>This type of representation - a full-face frontal view of the Virgin and Child - was frequent in early Christian art and can be found in many Armenian wall reliefs of the fourth to seventh centuries.�Miniatyren visar den monumentala kavaliteten som är typisk för många scener i manuskriptet (jmfr. Bebådelsen s. 25). Den stora figuren av den sittande Jungfrun tenderar att fylla hela sidan. De djupa mörka färgerna hos hennes skrud skapar en slående kontrast mot den bleka rosa ronen i bakgrunden, så att den senare får en lätt tunnhet, trots de invecklade utsmyckningsmönstren. The conglomeration of buildings seen behind the Evangelist is depicted, in the typically medieval manner, with the help of inverted perspective meant to render spatial depth. Both the buildings and the figure of the Evangelist are characterized by somewhat elongated proportions. The skilful treatment of the folds of St. Matthew's robe and the subtle tonal modelling of the face suggest that the artist was trained under a very competent master.�Miniatyren visar konstnärens intresse i arkitektoniska bakgrund, även uppenbart i andra manuskript tillhörande samma grupp som 1270 års Bibel. Anhopningen av byggnader som syns bakom evangelisterna är avbildad på ett typiskt medeltida sätt, med hjälp av omvänt perspektiv avsett för att återge ett spatialt djup. Både byggnaderna och figurerna av evangelisterna kännetecknas av något förlängda proportioner. Den skickliga behandlingen av vecken hos S:t Matteus skrud och den sudtila tonen hos modelleringen av ansiktet föreslår att konstnären var skolad av en kompetent mästare.")

The arrangement of the figures standing four abreast is characteristic of tenth- and eleventh-century Armenian manuscripts. The emphasized linear quality of the miniature and the general symmetry and regularity of the drawing and colouring enable the artist to strike an original note in the treatment of the subject. There is no doubt that Melchizedek was a highly gifted artist and a prominent figure in Armenian medieval art.�Konstnärens förkärlek för arkaiska modeller finns manifesterad i denna grupp av fyra evangelister. Arrangemanget av figurerna som står sida vid sida är karaktäristisk för 900- och 1000-talens armeniska manuskript. Den betonade linjära kvaliteten hos miniatyren och den allmänna symmetrin och regelbundenheten hos ritningen och färgsättningen tillåter konstnären att skapa en originell bild av ämnet. Det finns inga tvivel om att Melchizedek var en högt begåvad konstnär och en framstående figur i armenisk medeltida konst.")
