As a rule, the Gospel episodes are represented by fragments or key symbols corresponding to certain scenes or motifs. Thus, a chalice symbolizes the Baptism, a shepherd blowing a pipe - the Nativity, etc. The Entry into Jerusalem is one of the few scenes presented in greater detail than the rest. The miniature is placed in the right outer margin, elements of the composition intruding between the lines. The whole page thus creates an impression of compositional integrity, in which the text and the illustration naturally supplement and visually support each other.�Flera marginalillustrationer i manuskriptet kompenserar för avsaknanden av hisidiga illustrerade miniatyrer. Som regel är evengeliernas episoder representerade av fragment eller nyckelsymboler som motsvarar vissa scener eller motiv. Därför betyder en kalk dopet, ett herde som blåser på ett rör - Jesu födelse etc. Intåget till Jerusalem är en av de få scener som finns presenterad i större deltaj än resten. Miniatyren är placerad i den högra yttre marginalen, element hos den komposition som tränger mellan linjerna. Hela sidan skapar därför ett intryck av kompositionell integritet, i vilket texten och illustrationen naturligt kompletterar och visuellt stödjer varandra.")

The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The restrained colour range is based on a combination of red (the prevalent colour), blue and gold. The treatment of details demonstrates the perfect taste of the illuminator. He supplements the intricate ornamental patterns with numerous figures of birds (cocks, hoopoes, etc.) and gives the columns' capitals the shape of ox or lion heads. Both the birds and the animal heads, despite their apparent naturalism, have a purely decorative colouring.�Konstnären ger företräde till storskaliga element och design och kolumnerna hos hans khoran är kortare än vanligt. Den begränsade färgpaletten är baserad på en kombination av rött (den dominerande färgen), blått och guld. Behandlingen av detaljer demonstrerar den perfekta smaken hos konstnären. Han kompletterar det invecklade dekorativa mönstret med flera figurer av fåglar (tuppar, härfåglar etc.) och ger kolumnernas kapitäl formen av en oxes eller ett lejons huvud. /mtd-dia-163-m.jpg "Although the artist's cognomen - Anetsi - indicates that his native town was Ani (the medieval capital of Armenia), his creative work did not owe much to his homeland. His miniatures display a great measure of Persian influence: the characters have round rosy-cheeked faces, narrow almond-shaped eyes and arched eyebrows. Their costumes are reminiscent of bright-coloured Oriental robes girded with wide sashes; even the ornament of the framing, evocative of Persian tiles, has a definite Oriental flavour.�Även om konstnärens familjenamn - Anetsi - indikerar att han var från staden Ani (medeltida huvudstaden i Armenien), har hans verk inte mycket att göra med hans hemland. Hans miniatyrer visar en stor del av persiskt inflytande: karaktärerna har runda rosenkindade ansikten, smala mandelformade ögon och bågformade ögonbryn. Such an interpretation, unusual for medieval art, can be traced back to early Eastern Christian models. Closely related in this respect to the Matenadaran Gospels is the thirteenth-century Arabian manuscript in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris (Ms. 13).�Den allmänna behandlingen av scenen motsvarar den ikonografiska traditionen som var accepterad vid denna tid, avvikande från den endast i representationen av änglarna som är avbildade svävande i luften istället för stående vid flodstranden. Simeon Ardjishetsi was the first to broaden the range of motifs included in the menological cycle. This pictorial cycle, with certain variations, is to be found in the Vaspourakan illuminated manuscripts up to the fifteenth century.�Simeon Ardjishetsi var den första som beredde spektrumet av motiv som inkluderas i menologiska cyckeln.
