The decline of Cilician miniature art towards the end of the thirteenth century is quite evident in this manuscript. It concerns the Evangelists' portraits and to an even greater extent the decor of the illuminated folios. The figures in the miniatures lose their suave elegance, the colours are no longer rich or refined. At the same time the main principles of figural and facial treatment and the traditions of the compositional arrangement of the scenes, inherited from the 1280s, remain almost unchanged.�Nedgången hos kilikisk miniatyr mot slutet av 1200-talet är rätt uppenbart i detta manuskript. Det rör sig om evengelisternas porträtt och i en ännu högre grad om dekoren av den illustrerade sidorna. Figurerna i miniatyrerna förlorar sin milda elegans, färgerna är inte längre rika eller förfinade. Samtidigt kvarblir principerna för figurernas och ansiktenas behandling och traditionerna för det kompositionella arrangemanget hos scenen, ärvt från 1280-talet, så gott som intakt.

Instead of the usual method of incorporating the illustrations into the text, adopted by most Cilician artists, Sargis Pidzak resorts to a compromise between the Oriental custom of grouping all the illustrations together and placing them before the text of the manuscript in a separate fascicle, and the Byzantine tradition of preceding each of the four Gospels with a full-page illustration: he places two miniatures before each of the Gospels. Apart from these, the manuscript contains a great number of marginal historiated miniatures which form a kind of reduced illustrative cycle. Thus, the motif of The Annunciation is represented only by the figure of the archangel, the episode of The Presentation in the Temple by an outline of a small church, etc.�Istället för den vanliga metoden för inarbetnignen av illustrationer in i texten, använt av de flesta kilikiska konstnärer, Sargis Pidzak använder sig av en kompromiss mellan orientaliska seder för gruppering av alla illustrationer tillsammans och deras placering innan manuskriptets text i en separat fascikel, och den bysantinska traditionen för föregången av var och en av de fyra evangelierna med fullsidiga illustrationer: han placerar två minatyrer innan varje evangelium. Föruom dessa, innehåller manuskriptet ett stort antal illustrerade miniatyrer i marginalen, vilka formar en sorts reducerad illustrativ cykel. Därmed presenteras motiven för Jungfrus bebådelse endast med figuren för ärkeängeln, episoden för Presentationen i templet, genom konturen av en liten kyrka etc.

/mtd-cil-127-m.jpg "The composition is stylistically related to the miniature depicting the same subject in the 1286 Lectionary, and presents a reduced version of the same iconographic model. Just as in the 1286 Lectionary, the characters are treated with a striking vividness and realism; their postures are natural and convincing, their faces and movements lively and expressive.<br>Tonal modelling aimed at achieving the effect of volume is reinforced by a sharp delineation of contours. The most prominent part in the colouring is played by different shades of lilac, violet and pink. The ingenious use of gold applied in fine, light strokes imparts a relief-like character to every detail.�Kompositionen är stilistisk relaterad till miniatyren som avbildar samma ämne i 1286 års Evangeliebok och presenterar en reducerad version av samma ikonografiska model. Precis som i 1286 års Evangeliebok, är karaktärerna behandlade med slående livlighet och realism; deras kroppshållning är naturliga och övertygande, deras ansikten och rörelser är naturenliga och uttrycksfulla. /mtd-cil-86-m.jpg "The page is remarkable for its clear and elegant calligraphy in which gold letters and ornate initials are set off by the austere black characters of the uncial script, and for the exquisite artistry of the marginal miniature which is in perfect harmony with the marginal ornamental design.<br>The image of Christ impresses one by its tranquil grandeur due to the skilful balance of the vertical and horizontal lines (Christ's upright figure and his flying cloak). But the most striking thing about the miniature is its emotion-charged colouring. The dark and gloomy hues give a tragic touch to the picture, while Christ's eyes seem to express serene calm and fortitude.�Sidan är anmärkningsvärd för dess tydliga och eleganta kaligrafi i vilken guldbokstäber och dekorativa initialer är satt mot de strama svarta karaktärerna av unicalskrift och för dess utsökta konstnärliga marginalminiatyrer som är i perfekt harmoni med den marginella utsmyckningsdesignen. A certain dynamic quality is felt in the figure of St. John bending over the feet of Christ. The network of pink lines in the background resembles the binding of an earlier Tatev manuscript (now in the Etchmiadzin collection), where a similar network forms the background of the two relief-like figures representing Grigor Tatevatsi and John Vorotnetsi.�Det stikta symmetrin hos kompositionen bryts av figurerna av sörjande änglar som sträcker sig utanför scenens ram. The representation of St. Prochoros is likewise rather unusual - he is shown not as a youth, but as a middle-aged man with a beard and moustache. On the whole, Khatcher's miniatures are remarkable for the intensity of facial expressions, unusual compositional treatment and characteristic colouring.�I enlighet med den dåtida vaspourakanska traditionen som skiljde sig från kanoniska scheman, har konstnären avbildad S:t John lutande på sin stav. It is characterized by a graphic quality of pictorial language, the consecutive spatial planes being indicated only by the overlapping of figures.<br>The modelling of forms is achieved here not by the varied subtle shades of colour, but by alternation of the darker and lighter tones. The above-mentioned graphic quality is due to the prominent use of the linear method in the treatment of the figures and draperies. In spite of a reticence and lack of variety in the purely pictorial devices, the miniature displays the high level of artistry characteristic of Cilician book illustration.�Scenen presenteras i en av de fullsidiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. Den kännetecknas av en grafisk kvalitet av bildspråk, på varandra efterföljande spatialla planerna som indikeras endast genom figurernas överlappande. Modelleringen av former uppnås här, inte av en variation av subtila färgnyanser, utan genom växlingen av mörka och ljusa toner. Den ovannämda grafiska kvaliten är på grund av den skickliga behandlingen av figurer och draperier.
