In his miniatures, the archaic models are interpreted with a rare sincerity and spontaneity. Canonical motifs are treated by the artist as if seen through the eyes of common people; here this tendency shows in the slightly naive manner in which the righteous are opposed to the sinners.�Ovsian är en typisk representant för den \"populära treden\" i vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. I hans miniatyrer, tolkas de arkaiska modellerna med en sällsynt ärlighet och spontanitet. Kanoniska motiv behandlas av artisten som om sedda genom den gemene individens ögon; här visas denna tendens genom den något naiva sättet som de rättfärdigade jämförs med syndarna.")

The portraits of the donor and his wife are skilfully incorporated into the composition. Their faces were apparently painted with a view to achieving a likeness. The many expressive devices used serve to accentuate the dramatic significance of the event. The composition is filled with pictorial details; the linear treatment based on the interlacing of curves creates a feeling of nervous anxiety; the figures are elongated to the point of distortion and do not correlate with each other in size; the gestures are intense and full of dynamism, the faces grave and sorrowful. A sense of drama is also conveyed in the colouring of the miniature, with its splashes of bright red and blue turning to purple.<br>At the same time, in spite of what appears to be an overprofu-sion of figures and details, the composition of the scene is maintained with the help of several vertical and horizontal lines (the Cross, the buildings in the background and the framing) which counterbalance the diagonal lines of the figures.�")

The Virgin is depicted sitting beside the cradle. The face looming near it represents Eve, whose appearance in the scene of The Nativity symbolizes redemption of the original sin. The same implication is probably attached to a miniature from a thirteenth-century Greek Gospel manuscript (Paris, Musee National, MS543), where the motif of The Fall is accompanied by the motif of The Nativity.�Scenens komposition är baserad på en arkaisk iconografisk modell vanligt i både den tidiga kristendomskonsten i Bysans och i den medeltida europeiska målningen. Jungfrun är avbildad sittande vid sidan om vaggan. Ansiktet som syns nära henne representerar Eva, vems närvaro i Kristi födelses scen symboliserar frälsningen från det ursprunliga syndet. Samma implikation är antagligen använt i miniatyren from 1200-talets grekiska evengeliemanuskript (Paris Musee National MS543), där motivet för Syndafallet åtföljs av motev för Kristi födelse.")

The large-scale figure of the seated Virgin tends to fill the entire page. The deep, dark colours of her robes make a striking contrast with the pale pink tone of the background, so that the latter acquires a light airiness, in spite of the intricate ornamentation patterns.<br>This type of representation - a full-face frontal view of the Virgin and Child - was frequent in early Christian art and can be found in many Armenian wall reliefs of the fourth to seventh centuries.�Miniatyren visar den monumentala kavaliteten som är typisk för många scener i manuskriptet (jmfr. Bebådelsen s. 25). Den stora figuren av den sittande Jungfrun tenderar att fylla hela sidan. De djupa mörka färgerna hos hennes skrud skapar en slående kontrast mot den bleka rosa ronen i bakgrunden, så att den senare får en lätt tunnhet, trots de invecklade utsmyckningsmönstren. Denna typ av representation - en helansiktes frpntvy av Jungfrun och barnet - var vanligt förekommande i många armeniska väggreliefer under 300- till 600-talen.")
