/mtd-gr-03-m.jpg "Representations of crosses raised on an ornamental base and decorated with floral motifs or with interlaced bands are usually found in the margins of Armenian manuscripts, full-page crosses occurring only in the earliest known books (ninth and tenth centuries). Such crosses form a prominent feature of the art of Eastern Christendom, especially of Syrian art. In many cases the ornamental and compositional treatment of the crosses is evocative of Armenian khatchkars.�Representationer av kors uppresta av utsmyckade baser och dekorerade med blommotiv eller med inflätade band hittas vanligen i marginalerna hos armeniska mauskript, medan helsidiga kors förekommer endast i de tidiga kända böckerna (800- och 900-talen). /mtd-dia-161-m.jpg "The miniature is based upon the iconographic pattern very rarely occurring in Armenian representations of The Passion cycle: apart from the usual attributes of the scene, the composition includes symbols of Ecclesia and Synagogue, of the Sun and the Moon, and also the figures of lamenting angels. In terms of its artistic and emotional impact this is one of the most expressive miniatures in the manuscript. The tragic atmosphere permeating the scene is felt not only in the figures, but also in the colouring, with its sombre shades of dark blue. The background represents the walls of Jerusalem (one bearing an inscription with the artist's signature).�Miniatyren är baserad på ikonografiskt mönster som är ytterst sällsynt förekommande i armeniska representationer av Kristi lidande: förutom den ovanliga attributerna i scenen, kompositionen även inkluderar symbolerna för ecclesia och synagoga, solen och månen, och även figurerna av klagande änglar. Vad det gäller dess konstnärliga och känslomässiga kraft är den en av de mest uttryckskraftiga miniatyrerna i manuskriptet. Den tragiska atmosfären som genomsyrar scenen känns inte igen enbart hos figurerna, utan även i färgsättningen, med dess dystra skuggor av mörkblå. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

/mtd-cil-150-m.jpg "The composition of the miniature is based on a balance between the two interrelated groups of figures, each of them characterized by complicated postures and varied movements (when the manuscript was rebound its top margins were cut off, and the upper part of the illustration was unfortunately lost). In terms of iconography this version is reminiscent of certain fragments from the scenes of The Descent from the Cross and The Entombment as rendered in the 1286 Lectionary. This probably indicates that the illustrators of these two manuscripts used the same iconographic model, but in the case of the 1320 Gospels this model was presented in a reduced version, probably for lack of space. On the whole, the comparison of the two versions is not to the advantage of the later one. The miniature in the \"Gospels by Eight Masters\" is characterized by a certain schematism and by an increased interest in the linear method. Besides, its colouring is less varied, while the use of shading in the modelling of faces and figures is rather limited and inadequate. The general decorative layout of the page, however, the treatment of certain details, and the skilful arrangement of figures are indicative of the artist's proficiency and taste.�Kompositionen hos miniatyren är baserad på en balans mellan de två sammankopplade grupperna av figurer, var och en karaktäriserad av kompliserade kroppshållningar och varierande rörelser (när manuskriptet bands om skars dess toppmarginal av och den övre delen av illustrationen har tyvärr gått förlorat). I termer av ikonografi påminner denna version om vissa fragmnet ur scenen Gravläggningen som återgavs i 1286 års Evangeliebok. Detta indikerar förmodligen att illustratörerna av dessa två manuskript använde samma ikonografiska modell, men hos 1320 års Evagelium presenterades denna modell i en reducerad version, förmodligen på grund av utrymmesbrist. I det hela är jämförelsen av de två versionerna ej till fördel av den senare. The combination of red, blue (or sometimes green) and gold, so typical of Cilician illumination, is supported here by a wide range of delicate pastel tints including pale lilac, soft violet, greyish-blue, ash-grey, cherry-red and light green. The restrained colour range is based on a combination of red (the prevalent colour), blue and gold. The treatment of details demonstrates the perfect taste of the illuminator. He supplements the intricate ornamental patterns with numerous figures of birds (cocks, hoopoes, etc.) and gives the columns' capitals the shape of ox or lion heads. Both the birds and the animal heads, despite their apparent naturalism, have a purely decorative colouring.�Konstnären ger företräde till storskaliga element och design och kolumnerna hos hans khoran är kortare än vanligt. Den begränsade färgpaletten är baserad på en kombination av rött (den dominerande färgen), blått och guld. Behandlingen av detaljer demonstrerar den perfekta smaken hos konstnären. Han kompletterar det invecklade dekorativa mönstret med flera figurer av fåglar (tuppar, härfåglar etc.) och ger kolumnernas kapitäl formen av en oxes eller ett lejons huvud. Både fåglarnas och djurens huvud, trots deras uppebara naturalism, har en ren dekorativ färgsättning.")
