The treatment of their large, almost monumental figures shows the fine draughtsmanship and the painterly skill of the artist. The figures stand against an ornamented background enlivened in the centre by an almost realistic touch - two arches with accurately rendered masonry, and a recess with a jug between them. The latter detail hints at the setting of the event, which was supposed to have taken place by a well. At the same time the Virgin has a ball of yarn in her hand, an allusion to her upbringing in the Temple of Jerusalem where she would spin and weave the priests' vestments. The miniature, therefore, combines two iconographic versions of The Annunciation - The Annunciation at the Well (the apocryphal version) and The Annunciation in the Temple.�Bilderna av Jungfrun och ärkeängeln Gabriel, avbildade i ett mjukt och delikat sätt, kännetecknas av skönehten och andligheten i deras ansikten. Behandlingen av deras stora, nästan monumentala figurer, visar konstnärens teckningskonst och hans målarskicklighet. The Matenadaran collection includes thirteen manuscripts illuminated by Zachariah Aghtamartsi between 1354 and 1403. The design of the book is unusual for the Armenian illuminated manuscripts in that the miniatures are incorporated into the text, sometimes taking up more than a half of the page.�Matenadarans samling omfattar tretton manuskrip illustrerade av Zachariah Aghtamartsi, mellan 1354 och 1403. This especially refers to the round shape of the table (which also occurs in the Rabula Gospels, A.D. 586, Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, MS107, and in the twelfth- and thirteenth-century Syrian manuscripts). The large ornate cross on the table, represented instead of the usual viands, symbolizes the Sacrifice of Christ.<br>The unorthodox iconography of the miniature determined to a certain extent the treatment of the images and compositional elements: in accordance with the basic principle of ornamental art, the key role is assigned to linear rhythm and colour.�Scenens ikonografi kan spåras till tidigt kristendom, praktiskt taget syriansk och koptiska föregångare. Detta berör speciellt den runda formen hos plattan (som också förekommer i Rabula Evangelierna, år 586, Florens, Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, MS107, och i 1100- och 1200-tals syrianska manuskript). Introducing this symbol, the artist followed the well-known medieval practice of combining two motifs expressing the same general idea in one composition. Furthermore, one of the related motifs could be used as a substitute for another.<br>In this manuscript, as in many other Armenian illuminated books, ornamental decor occupies a prominent position: every miniature in the volume is surrounded by a framework of varied decorative patterns.�Det enda ovanliga draget hos denna i överigt ikonografisk konventionella komposition är dess runda utsmyckning som tjänar som en symbol för den sista nattvarden. Genom introduceringen av denna symbol följde konstnären den välkända medeltida vanan att kombinera två motiv som uttrycker en generell idé i en och samma komposition. Dessutom kan det ena av de inkluderade motiven användas som en ersättning för det andra. I detta manuskript, som i många andra armeniska illustrerade böcker, upptar utsmyckningen en viktig plats: varje miniatyr i volymen är omgiven av ett ramverk av olika dekorativa mönster.")
