Such crosses form a prominent feature of the art of Eastern Christendom, especially of Syrian art. In many cases the ornamental and compositional treatment of the crosses is evocative of Armenian khatchkars.�Representationer av kors uppresta av utsmyckade baser och dekorerade med blommotiv eller med inflätade band hittas vanligen i marginalerna hos armeniska mauskript, medan helsidiga kors förekommer endast i de tidiga kända böckerna (800- och 900-talen). Tserun belongs to a group of Vaspurakan artists whose work was entirely based on and inspired by the local traditions of book illumination. Tserun had numerous pupils and followers, so that the term "Tserunian style" came to be adopted in specialist literature.�Tserun tillhör en grupp avVaspourakans konstnärer vars verk var helt baserat på och inspirerat av de lokala traditionerna för bokmålning. Tserun hade flera elever och följare, så att begreppet "Tseruniska stilen" kom att antas i speciella litteratur.

The marginal decoration on f. 20 contains an allegoric representation of the Tree of Jesse. S. Der Nersessian believes that this motif, which had long been popular in Western European art, became more and more widespread during the thirteenth century in the art of Eastern Christendom.<br>The ornate headpiece of the other folio (f. 107) is reminiscent of a lattice window through which dazzling sunlight breaks forth. The overall decor of the folio is made remarkably attractive and expressive by the contrast of the light openwork ornament with the solid figures of two fallow deer presented symmetrically, in a heraldic fashion, in the middle of the headpiece, and with the delicate ornamental design of the border.�Dekoren här är mindre praktfull än den i titelsidan hos 1286 års evangeliebok. Den är mer återhållsam och kompakt i sina proportioner. Dekorationen hos marginalerna hos f. 20 innehåller en allegorisk representation av Isais träd. S. The arrangement of the figures standing four abreast is characteristic of tenth- and eleventh-century Armenian manuscripts. The emphasized linear quality of the miniature and the general symmetry and regularity of the drawing and colouring enable the artist to strike an original note in the treatment of the subject. There is no doubt that Melchizedek was a highly gifted artist and a prominent figure in Armenian medieval art.�Konstnärens förkärlek för arkaiska modeller finns manifesterad i denna grupp av fyra evangelister. Arrangemanget av figurerna som står sida vid sida är karaktäristisk för 900- och 1000-talens armeniska manuskript. Den betonade linjära kvaliteten hos miniatyren och den allmänna symmetrin och regelbundenheten hos ritningen och färgsättningen tillåter konstnären att skapa en originell bild av ämnet. The gently modelled face and hands, the graceful shape of her body, the skilfully rendered folds of her robe and cloak reminiscent of antique sculpture, and above all the emotional expressiveness of her figure and face bear witness to the artist's preference for the Proto-Renaissance art. At the same time Hovhannes was not yet completely free from the conventions of the old tradition; a realistic depiction of a nude body was still beyond his capacity, and the treatment of some compositional details remained rather schematic if not naive.�Miniatyren är ett perfekt exemplar av Hovhannes stil. Hans största framgång vad det gälelr denna scen är Jungfruns bild. Det varsamt modellerade ansiktet och händerna, hennes graciösa kroppsform, de skickligt återgivna väcken i hennes kappa påminner om antika skulpturer och, framför allt, vittnar det känlomässiga uttrycket i hennes ansikte och figur om konstnärens förkärlek för proto-renäsans konst. Samtidigt var Hovhannes inte helt fri från den gamla traditionens konventioner; en realistisk återgivning av en naken kropp var fortfarande bortom hans förmåga och behandlingen av vissa kompositionella detaljer återstod rätt schematiska, om inte naiva.")

Although on the whole the miniatures in the manuscript conform to the current iconographic tradition, the treatment of characters and the general artistic manner bear a clear mark of the author's individuality. The latter is first and foremost manifest in his tentative but quite successful attempt to render the visual effect of depth and volume by means of the chiaroscuro technique, which means that he was familiar with contemporary Italian art.�Även om i sin helhet motsvarar miniatyrerna i manuskriptet den ikonografiska traditionen, bär behandlingen av karaktärerna och det generella konstnärliga sättet ett tydligt märke tillhörande författarens individualitet. Den senare syns först och främst i hans tentativa men ganska framgångsrika försök att återge den visuella effekten av djup och volym genom klärobskyr teknik, vilket innebär att han var bekant med samtida italiensk konst.

The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. In these miniatures the local traditions of Siunik are curiously mixed with tendencies derived from Cilician art.�Miniatyrerna i detta manuskript är bland Taronatsis bästa verk. /mtd-cil-111-m.jpg "The ornamentation of the headpiece is based on a pattern of interlacing red lines which form pentagonal and octagonal stars standing out against the gold background in a kind of decorative lattice. The use of black aimed at giving prominence to the pattern emphasizes the glow of the gold and imparts an additional splendour to the decor of the headpiece. The treatment of the ornamental patterns in this and other manuscripts of the same school is much more detailed and elaborate than in the miniatures produced at Hromkla. The marginal ornamentation on this page may serve as a good example. It is based on a very complicated pattern in which every subsequent motif grows, as it were, out of the one preceding it: thus, the foliate design incorporates various figures; the interlacing bands support human heads crowned by the figures of birds, whose tails form new interlacing bands, and so on. Worthy of attention is the script which, apart from the usual ornate initial, is composed of large ornamental characters incorporating zoomorphic and geometric elements.�Överstyckets utsmyckning är baserad på ett mönster av sammanflätade röda linjer som formar fem- och åttasidiga stjärnor som står ut mot den gyllene bakgrunden i ett dekorativt galler. Användningen av svart som är menat att ge tyngd till mönstret betonar glöden hos guldet och skänker ytterligare skönhet till dekoren hos överstycket. Behandlingen av de dekorativa mönstren i detta och andra manuskript från samma skola är mycket mer detaljerade och ingående än i miniatyrer producerade i Hromkla. Marginalutsmyckningen på denna sida kan tjäna som ett gott exempel.
