/mtd-cil-150-m.jpg "The composition of the miniature is based on a balance between the two interrelated groups of figures, each of them characterized by complicated postures and varied movements (when the manuscript was rebound its top margins were cut off, and the upper part of the illustration was unfortunately lost). In terms of iconography this version is reminiscent of certain fragments from the scenes of The Descent from the Cross and The Entombment as rendered in the 1286 Lectionary. This probably indicates that the illustrators of these two manuscripts used the same iconographic model, but in the case of the 1320 Gospels this model was presented in a reduced version, probably for lack of space. On the whole, the comparison of the two versions is not to the advantage of the later one. The miniature in the \"Gospels by Eight Masters\" is characterized by a certain schematism and by an increased interest in the linear method. Besides, its colouring is less varied, while the use of shading in the modelling of faces and figures is rather limited and inadequate. The general decorative layout of the page, however, the treatment of certain details, and the skilful arrangement of figures are indicative of the artist's proficiency and taste.�Kompositionen hos miniatyren är baserad på en balans mellan de två sammankopplade grupperna av figurer, var och en karaktäriserad av kompliserade kroppshållningar och varierande rörelser (när manuskriptet bands om skars dess toppmarginal av och den övre delen av illustrationen har tyvärr gått förlorat). I termer av ikonografi påminner denna version om vissa fragmnet ur scenen Gravläggningen som återgavs i 1286 års Evangeliebok. The saturated blue of the upper part of the miniature which serves to set off its compositional centre, the energetic outline of the rock which resembles a torn and crumpled strip of paper and serves as an expressive decorative element, and, finally, the flying cloak of Christ all create an atmosphere of intense and dynamic dramatism.�Scenen hittas ytterst sällsynt i armeniska illustratörers verk. Der Nersessian, such portraits placed inside medallions are \"a typically Armenian feature which does not occur in Byzantine or other East Christian manuscripts\" (S. The name of Kirakos is associated with the appearance of a new trend in the Vaspurakan school of book painting. The main distinctive feature characterizing works by Kirakos and his followers consists in the emphasis on linear treatment.�Namnet Kirakos är associerat med uppkomsten av en ny trend hos vaspourakanska skolan för bokmålning. Den huvudsakliga särdraget som kännetecknar Kirakos verk och det hos hans efterföljare är betoningen på den linjära kompositionen.

Although the miniature is not limited by the usual rectangular frame, its composition is well-defined and complete in itself due to the compact arrangement of the figures which fit so neatly into the general scheme that the spaces between them (filled in with gold) are very small. The left lower part of the miniature shows the episode of The Cutting-off of the Ear of the High Priest's Slave.�Denna och den omedelbart efterföljande reproduktionen visar den tvåsidiga bilden innehållande illustrationer om episoder från Förrådandet och Kristus rättegång hos högsta prästerna. Även om miniatyren inte begränsas till den vanliga rektangulära ramen, dess kompisition är väldefinierad och komplett tack vare det kompakta arrangemanget av figurerna som passar så väl in i det generella schemat som utrymmet mellan dem (utfyllt med guld) är mycket små. The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres. The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. Samtidigt avslöjar både miniatyrerna hans intresse i linjära design som manifesteras i den skapra avbildningen av klädernas veck och den någon grafiska karaktären hos representationen. /mtd-cil-102-m.jpg "Whereas in The Descent from the Cross (PL 96) the artist emphasized the inner dramatism of the scene, in The Crucifixion he is more concerned with the motifs of sacrifice and redemption, and in his attempt to convey the latter he endows the otherwise mournful scene with a certain touch of elation. This is achieved by the soft colouring excluding all contrasting colours, as well as by the treatment of the principal characters. The allegories of Ecclesia and Synagogue which were quite a novelty in the Armenian miniature at the time were borrowed by the artist from Byzantine and Western European art.�Medan i Nedstigningen från korset (PL96) har konstnären betonat den inre dramatiken i scenen, är han i Korsfästelsen mer mån om motiven för uppoffring och botgöring och i sitt försök att uttrycka den senare skänker han en viss upprymdhet till den i övrigt sorgsna scenen. Detta uppnås genom den mjuka färgsättningen så väl som genom behandlingen av huvudkaraktärerna.
