While representations of Eusebius and Carpi-anus occur frequently enough in Armenian illuminated manuscripts (although, according to S.Der Nersessian, they became widespread in Armenian and especially Cilician book painting only in the thirteenth century), the portrayal of the Old Testament prophets in a Gospel manuscript is rather unusual. The artist probably wished to emphasize the close links between the Old and the New Testament.<br>Thanks to Toros Roslin's skill the portraits become an integral part of the entire decorative composition, which also includes birds of different species, in most cases depicted very naturalistically. Some of them, however, at first sight appear to be merely elements of the ornamental pattern, and only a closer look reveals their lifelike features. In giving them a static character, at the expense of vividness and realism of representation, the artist had in mind the decorative role these figures were to play in the design of the page.�Tympanon hos bågarna som dekorera den rektangulära entablement hos khoranerna består av halvlånga representationer av Eusebius och Carpianus (på sidorna med bokstäver), av profeterna och av Kristus och Jungfrun (ovanför kanoniska plattan). medan representationerna av Eusebius och Carpianus finns ofta illustrerade i Armeniska manuskript (även om enligt S. The figures are arranged almost symmetrically, in a frieze-like fashion, thus forming a well-balanced composition. The miniatures in this manuscript are among Taronatsi's best works. The manuscript was copied in Cilicia for the prominent Cilician Constable Smbat. By the end of the thirteenth century it had changed hands and found its way to the Crimea, where it was supplemented with a series of historiated miniatures.�Manuskritpet kopierades i Kilikien åt den framstående ståthållaren Smbat. Vid slutet av 1200-talet hade den bytt ägare och hittade sin väg till Krim, där det kompletterades med en serie av illustrerade miniatyrer.

The role of architectural background is reduced to a minimum, the small towers in the left background corner of each of the two miniatures being treated in a summary manner and resembling more the backs of the Evangelists' chairs than buildings. This lack of interest in the architectural background was typical of the Hromkla school in general, and was shared even by Toros Roslin himself. Although his treatment of background was on the whole more detailed, it never played such an important role in his compositions as in the miniatures produced in other Cilician centres (see Pls. 104, 110). The figures of the Evangelists show the artist's attempt to model the body shapes by means of shading. At the same time, both miniatures reveal his interest in linear design which is manifest in the sharp delineation of the folds of the garments and in the somewhat graphical character of representation. The ornamental design of the frame is evocative of cloisonne enamel.�Båda kompositionerna är dominerade av storskaliga figurer av evengelisterna. Rollen hos den arkitektoniska bakgrunden är reducerad till ett minimum, de små tornen i det vänstra bakgrundshörnet av varje miniatyr är behandlade i ett kortfattat sätt och liknar mer baken på evengelisternas stolar än byggnaderna. Bristen på intresset hos den arkitektoniska bekgrunden var typisk hos Hromklaskolan i allmänhet och användes även av Toros Roslin själv. Även om hans behandling av bakgrunden var i sin helhet mer detaljerad, spelade den inte någon större roll i hans kompositioner som i miniatyrer producerade i andra kilikiska center. Figurerna hos evangelisterna visar konstnärens försök att forma kroppsformerna genom skuggning. Samtidigt avslöjar både miniatyrerna hans intresse i linjära design som manifesteras i den skapra avbildningen av klädernas veck och den någon grafiska karaktären hos representationen. Contrary to his usual practice of choosing laconic versions of the Gospel scenes, Toros Roslin depicts here a great number of figures connected with various subsidiary motifs. Thus, apart from the angels above the cave, the miniature includes the scenes of The Bathing of the Child, The Annunciation to the Shepherds and The Adoration of the Magi. This combination of several motifs irrespective of time and place, typical of medieval art, imparts to the scene a somewhat artificial character, which is on the whole unusual for Toros Roslin.<br>At the same time, the multifigured composition does not in any way impede the understanding of its message, since the focal point of the scene is made conspicuous by means of a contrast between the bright red cover of the Virgin's bed and the deep black mouth of the cave.�Från kompositionens perspektiv är denna en av de mest komplexa scenerna i manuskriptet. Till skillnad från hans vanliga vana att välja lakoniska versioner av evengeliescenerna, avbildar Toros Roslin här ett stort antal av figurerna som är kopplade till olika underliggande motiv. Därmed, förutom änglarna ovanför grottan, inkluderar miniatyren scener från Badandet av barnet, Herdarnas bebådelse och De vise männens vördnadsbetygelse. Denna kombination av olika motiv, utan hänsyn till till tid och plats, typisk för medeltida konst, skänker en någon artificiell karaktär åt scenen som i dess helhet är ovanligt för Toros Roslin. Here, the ornamental patterns decorate not only the background and the architectural details, but also the Evangelist's robes. The picture resembles a carpet, and this visual effect is further enhanced by the ornamental bands added to the frame and creating the impression of a carpet fringe.�Utsmyckningen spelar en ledande roll i illustartionen av detta manuskript, som även är ett framstående exemplar även bland illustrerade miniatyrer.
